Your First Job Fresh Out Of College: Here Are Some Things To Consider

An entry-level job right out of college is your first walk in the park for your professional career. However, every position comes with its own list of do’s and don’ts. Here are a few to be weary of as you get started.

DO: be respectful and kind to everybody. Yes, everybody, including that co-worker who has rubbed you the wrong way on multiple occasions. The saying “kill them with kindness” rings true in every facet of life, but especially at work. You cannot let anyone get in your head and interfere with your work ethic. Respect can get you a long way.

DON’T: engage in political and religious conversations with your co-workers. These conversations can often turn into heated debates, causing unnecessary tension in the office. Having a differing religious or political belief than your counterparts should not get in the way of the work you produce as a team. Think about that before you bring up a discussion about any upcoming elections.

DO: take criticism. Your first job is the perfect place to learn and develop your skillset for the future. Ask your superiors to critique your work and if they offer any advice, take notes on what you need to improve on. Criticism can be difficult to hear sometimes, but it is important that you learn to not be offended by it.

DON’T: blast your music. It is fine to want to play music while you work, but be mindful of the people around you. If it gets to the point where your music becomes too distracting, you could be the annoyance in the office. This is never the reputation that you want. Keep your music at a reasonable volume and even ask those around you if it is too loud.

DO: attend office events. Whether it is a lunch or a weekend social, be sure to attend and get to know the people you are working with. This is a great opportunity to talk with your bosses and other superiors outside of the office. Let loose, but also keep in mind that you need to remain professional. In other words, do not drink too much booze.

DON’T: shy away from unfamiliarity. The best way to learn and put yourself out there is to volunteer to do things you have not done before. Keeping your name at the top of the list shows your boss that you are willing to take a chance and will ensure that you will remain fresh in everyone’s minds. Who knows, you might be asked to show your co-workers what you have learned!

Your fresh out of school entry-level job should be a major learning curve for you. Do not shy away from the new opportunities and getting to know your co-workers. Maintain a good reputation to prepare for a good review down the road.
