Your Fence Posts
The summer before my senior year of high school our cows broke out of the pasture…a lot. Our bull could sense the presence of “friends” beyond our fence and would jump it to go for a visit. By the way, “jump the fence” is just an expression. 1000-lb animals aren’t known for their liftoff so there’s usually not much fence left behind.
The entire summer of 2006 I spent my mornings in the hot Florida sun building a new fence. I learned a lot that summer…mostly that it gets rather hot in the summer in Central Florida.?
When you’re putting up a fence, you’ll be smart to bury two posts first: one where you want to start and the other where you want to end. After we’d properly packed the two posts, we’d tie a bright orange string around one unspooling the thread and tie it around the other post. This created a direct line we could then use as a guide so the line would be straight. And that was typically my job as the youngest.
I think about this concept a lot working with my clients. Because identifying what’s most important to you will only motivate you to build a strong, sturdier strategy for yourself and the people and things you care about. Did you have a clear vision of your dream future before building your own strategy? If not, take sometime to ask three short questions:
· Who matters to you?

· What matters to you?
· When will it matter the most?
In other words: what are your fence posts??
And if you ever want someone to help guide you along the orange string to your dreams – let’s connect on a call. And remember, the stronger the fence you build, the easier it is to keep the cows in the yard.
