It Is YOUR Fault You Face Resistance!

There, I said it.

"It's YOUR Fault"

YOU! Especially if you are an improvement consultant, part of a internal change team Or even a leader leading a change initiative. Look no further than the mirror IF you are facing resistance from people.

I'm never a fan of blame, and encourage always seek first to understand. BUT, couldn't resist here as I wanted to grab your attention.

Often when we deliver change, and someone doesn't join us on the journey, or get on the bus with us (in another issue I may talk about my dislike of those 2 phrases, but for now lets continue) we label them as resistant, as the ones who are going to get in our way, when in fact just those thoughts alone mean, we may be getting in our own way!

Because, every time we engage or deal with these 'villains' these 'bad eggs' we are thinking of them as such and it is likely to affect the way we engage with them. Lets play a little game, I am going to give you 2 scenarios, in each scenario you need to speak to the person I describe and get an answer from them to an important project question:

1) You walk into a room and one of your friends, a huge advocate of who you are and what you are trying to do is there, you look over you see them, they are smiling- WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? And, what do you do next?

2) You walk into the same room and catch the eye of your arch nemesis, someone who is against your initiative, sat there arms, miserable look on their face - WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? And, what do you do next?

I bet your actions are different in both situations, you may even have chosen to email in scenario 2 lol, but why? why do you act differently? what causes this? the room is the same, the project is the same, the question you need to ask is the same, BUT, the person you need to engage with is different.

HOW we do things is arguably the most important part of our role as a leader of people and change, for example:

BUT fundamentally HOW you go about the change is key.

- How you turn up every day

- How you engage and build relationships

- How you are helped or hindered by your own internal voice

- How you communicate

- How you ask questions

- How you listen

Etc etc

SO, I go back to the original message, Often the main cause of the resistance you face is YOU, so HOW can you change your approach to turn up and be the best you to help get the best from others?

I can't believe we are in August already, the podcast 'Business Problems Solved' is now only a few episodes away from the 200th episode and this week I had the immense pleasure of chatting with Philip Holt about his journey and his new book 'Leading Lean By Living Lean'.

You can watch the episode on the Get Knowledge YouTube channel, or by searching for 'Business Problems Solved' in your favourite podcast player.

A few of the other episodes recently have been solo episodes where I have shared some what I believe important topics such as:

  • People are not like pasta (one of my favourite titles to date)
  • Are you celebrating often enough and the right things
  • The importance of 'Always Making Time' the 4th life lesson

And that is it another issue complete, have a great fortnight and we will chat soon!

Have Fun
