Your Family Culture Holiday Survival Guide

We’ve put together some survival tips to help you enjoy a happy and stress-free holiday season with your family.

Just like organisations, families are social systems guided by deeply embedded social norms shaped over years—if not generations—of interactions.

Welcome to your family culture!

The interpersonal circumplex is a universal model of social interactions. Whether we’re talking about workplaces, social clubs, or family gatherings, the basic map of interpersonal behavior remains the same.

This year, commit to showing up as your best self. It’s been a particularly challenging year for many of us.

Take a look at our guide and pick an interpersonal behavior to turn into an implementation intention—a simple “if-then” statement. For example: “IF I see my sister on Christmas Day, THEN I will remind myself that I don’t always have to win that argument.”

Have fun, and remember what both sages and science teach us: what we give out, we get back.

Thank you for your support this year!

See you in 2025!

Perhaps since I am about to spend a couple of days with my in-laws, it occurs to me that the “Family Culture Holiday Survival Guide” would be perfect as placemats! I am envisioning throughout dinner people surreptitiously shifting their silverware this way or that in order to sneak a peek at one of your “survival tips” ??
