Your Face Is Not Your Own

Alan Mulally, the former CEO of Boeing and Ford named Person of the Year by TIME Magazine in 2009, shared valuable leadership insights with the members of the 100 Coaches organization gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, for our 3rd Annual Meeting this past summer.? During his interview with the world's #1 Ranked Leadership Thinker and Executive Coach, Marshall Goldsmith, he made a statement I will never forget: “Your face is not your own.”?
Alan said that as the CEO, he learned that he could not walk out of his office with his face showing anything other than optimism and positivity.? If he walked out with a sullen face, “it was as if the stock price would start to drop instantly” because people would make decisions based on his facial expression—not his words.?
Alan shared this advice with Dr. Jim Kim, a renowned medical expert and former head of the World Bank, in a different way.? He said: “You have a nice smile! Use it!" Jim said this advice from Alan, a variation of “your face is not your own,” was beneficial to his leadership effectiveness.
Alan’s words have significant meaning for leaders at all levels of organizations—in the C-Suite and beyond. It is a powerful tool when we learn to let our faces emit the ray of sunshine that feeds and uplifts people no matter what is happening around them.? As Alan taught, let’s remember our faces are not our own and use them to show optimism and positivity. This will become contagious and enhance the culture of the teams and the organizations we lead.

I was honored to be featured in the 2023 Winter Edition of “Moments Matter” Magazine by Dave Sanderson—one of the last people off the “Miracle on the Hudson” flight.?
In this article, I reflect on my decision to complete my college degree by enrolling at Northwestern University late in life.??In telling the story of my return time at Northwestern, I often share the story of my relationship with Bob Dean, who became my mentor and a transformational figure in my life.??This is one of the first times I go into detail about the role of the school, the journey, and the process that changed my life.?
This article allowed me to acknowledge and thank my outstanding professors like Charles Whitaker, Kevin Murnane, Daniel Moser, Ph.D., Samuel R. Tepper, Ph.D., Robin Erickson, Ph.D, Gary Phillips, Leslie Fischer, and ALEEN BAYARD, Ph.D. who were pivotal in my development at Northwestern and have continued to be influential in my life to this day.??I am grateful to them and Northwestern and my decision in a moment that mattered.
