Your Experience Won't Sell Itself When You're Over 40

Many age 40 job seekers feel that their experience should sell itself ... but can't figure out why their job search isn't working so well.

I hear senior job seekers say that their "experience speaks for itself".

These job seekers don't realize that your experience doesn't sell you well when you're age 40+. Here are 2 reasons why:

1) Your experience describes your qualifications, and qualifications aren't enough: In a competitive job market like 2023, employers see many times more qualified candidates than they can interview, so being qualified makes you average. But when you're age 40+ employers expect that you'll cost more, so they expect more from candidates they'd have to pay more. Selling your experience, responsibilities and qualifications don't make you appear any better than average - To employers, it's like getting a VW but paying for a Mercedes.

2) You experience could be good .... or bad: When you describe your experience, you describe the things you were supposed to do. But what you don't do is to describe success or failure, making the employer guess if your experience was good, or poor.

The only reason you're selling yourself based on your experience, is it's what you've been taught to do.
