Is Your Event More Interesting Than A Cell Phone?

Let's face it #eventprofs, cellphones are hard to compete with when it comes to keeping the attention of our guests. After all there's so much candy to be crushed, and so many words to have with friends! Oh, wait hold on, I have a Facebook notification . . . sorry about that, just wanted to check and see who's life is better than mine at the moment. Here's how to keep your attendees attentive:

  1. Short & Sweet - Consider shaving that 60 minute program to 40 minutes.
  2. Voice of God / Video Announcements - Sometimes a microphone can turn someone into a monster . . . well perhaps that's extreme, but seriously, pre-recorded video or Voice of God announcements will eradicate rambling and keep you on schedule. An energetic, deep-voiced "Ladies & Gentleman, please help me welcome . . . " can be a game changer.
  3. Entertainment - "Our guests are immature, can you help us keep their attention?" Yep, we get calls like that! In fact, even educational conferences are switching to "Info-tainment" rather than inviting Mr. Einstein himself to speak. Mixing music and entertainment with educational sessions or with a long awards ceremonies causes those cellphones to be re-directed to the stage - camera ready. (You know how everyone is a video journalist now?)
  4. Dim the Lights - It still amazes me that this simple crowd calmer often goes unused. Usually it's because no one knows where the switch is, or where the guy with the key to the switch is. Hint: He's usually out back . . . on his cellphone!
  5. Make it Formal - They say people behave better when they are dressed better. I can attest to the fact that when people dress formal they suddenly feel proper - more doors are held open, more napkins are placed in laps, and there is 47% less chocolate frosting on faces!
  6. Save the Spirited Drink - Is your audience acting like they've had too much to drink? Then they probably have. If you choose to serve spirited beverages, timing is of the essence.
  7. Keep them Guessing - Adding an element of suspense or surprise can keep your guests riveted to the program. This could be mini entertainment appearances, prizes, giveaways, answers to intriguing questions, etc.
  8. Engage in Conversation - Ask the crowd questions, take a vote, bring volunteers onstage, etc. Technology provides us with so many new ways to connect - find a communication platform that suits your vision.

I want to hear from you! What attention retention techniques have worked well for you?
