The Biden-Harris Administration has announced a groundbreaking $1.3 billion funding opportunity to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure nationwide, aiming to enhance accessibility and inclusivity across urban, rural, and major roadway areas. This initiative, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, targets multi-family housing and disadvantaged communities, deploying Level 2 and DC fast EV chargers to bolster clean transportation efforts. Applications are now open to various government entities, emphasizing the importance of strategic deployment to achieve national sustainability goals, including halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
A new article from The Verge reports on the collaboration between the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and startup Utilidata is leveraging AI tools to analyze EV charging behavior, aiming to enhance grid reliability and the EV charging experience. The study reveals that inconsistent power draw during charging can lead to equipment wear and energy inefficiencies. By providing real-time insights, AI models offer utilities the ability to anticipate and mitigate these issues, facilitating more efficient grid management and better informing drivers on optimal charging practices. While still in its early stages, this research underscores the importance of preparing the grid for the increasing demand from EVs and highlights the potential of AI in addressing emerging challenges at the grid edge.
