Are your employees coachable? 5 Signs to look for.

Identifying coachable employees is crucial for organizational growth and success. While possessing experience, technical skills and academic qualifications like an MBA's is valuable, true potential lies in an individual's ability to learn, adapt, and grow. So, how can you recognize MBA-level coachability in your team members?

  1. Openness to Feedback: Coachable employees actively seek feedback and demonstrate a willingness to learn from it. They view feedback as an opportunity for improvement rather than criticism.
  2. Curiosity and Hunger for Knowledge: Those with leadership-potential coachability exhibit a continuous desire to expand their knowledge base. They ask insightful questions, seek out new challenges, and proactively engage in learning opportunities.
  3. Adaptability and Resilience: Coachable individuals are resilient in the face of adversity. They embrace change, remain flexible, and view setbacks as learning experiences rather than obstacles.
  4. Ownership of Development: Coachable Employees take ownership of their personal and professional development. They set ambitious goals, actively pursue growth opportunities, and hold themselves accountable for their progress.
  5. Effective Communication Skills: Coachable individuals excel in communication, both in expressing their ideas and actively listening to others. They engage in constructive dialogue, collaborate effectively, and are receptive to different perspectives.

What can you do when someone is not aware or is resisting coaching for improvement or alignment with the organization's goals?

Assessments like DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness) can still provide valuable insights and guidance beyond the well known and brilliant communication styles assessments. But that is not all they can do.

Did you know that you can help someone by identifying their Leadership Style, Conflict Resolution Style, Coaching Style, Learning Style, Entrepreneurial Style, and more...

Even when dealing with someone who may not initially appear coachable. Here's how expanded assessments can help:

  1. Understanding Communication Styles: DISC assessments help identify an individual's preferred communication style. By understanding how someone prefers to receive information and interact with others, you can adapt your approach to better resonate with them, even if they are initially resistant to coaching.
  2. Building Rapport and Trust: By recognizing and acknowledging your client's communication preferences, you can build rapport and establish trust more effectively. This can create a more open and receptive environment for coaching interventions, even if your client may initially be resistant.
  3. Tailoring Coaching Strategies: Assessments provide insights into your team's behavioural tendencies and preferences. Leveraging this information, you can tailor coaching strategies and interventions to better align with their natural inclinations, making the coaching process more engaging and effective.
  4. Identifying Potential Barriers to Coachability: DISC assessments may reveal underlying factors that contribute to your client's resistance to coaching, such as fear of change, distrust of authority, or preference for autonomy. By identifying these barriers, you can address them proactively and develop strategies to overcome them.
  5. Enhancing Self-Awareness: DISC assessments promote self-awareness by highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and behavioural tendencies. Encouraging your client to reflect on their assessment results can foster greater self-awareness and insight, laying the foundation for personal growth and development.

Building a strong team with exceptional leadership skills begins with the communication styles of the leader. Learning how others process information, and assessments can provide valuable insights and tools to support the coaching & leadership process, ultimately facilitating meaningful progress and growth.

I would love coaching and coachability to become a regular part of the business conversation Dr. Carolina M Billings, which you are doing ??. Assessments can be validating and eye opening tools to help a person know themselves better and I find it's important to let client know that the assessment is a guideline and path to deeper understanding, not a life sentence or a crutch.

Employees eager to learn and grow are like swimmers, not just keeping afloat but enjoying the swim with a smile. These folks bring fresh ideas, are resilient in the face of challenges, and can pivot when necessary. They keep the organization di'namic, ensuring it’s surviving and thriving. The beauty of coachability is that it’s not a fixed trait; it’s like a swimmer's muscle that can be developed with the proper support and environment. ??

This was a great read. As a former teacher, I can see where this would be as powerful in the education field as it would be in business.
