Thank You - Your email subject line made me cry

“Life Does Not Move In One Direction” it said in the subject line. I immediately saw it was from a coach, teacher and author Samantha Bennett who for probably over eight years sends out almost a daily email which comes into my inbox.

The second my eyes re-scanned the subject line I burst into tears.?

I’m not sure if it was relief or that knowing-ness when someone puts into words the fragile moment that you cannot yourself.

I’d spent the night sleeplessly wrestling with plans, ideas, strategies, hacks, grand decisions, and ultimate resolutions. Why, because like anyone in artistic production, and as a producer who can proudly mouth the one sentence all producers need, namely “I have a number of projects at varying stages of development”, then I have to admit that through circumstances, including those out of my control, some of these project will not budge neither up nor down.?

I skim read on, “We love the story of life as a road. (Success is a ladder. Time is ever marching forward.)?

But we know it's not true.?

We are on shifting sands, sliding forward and backward and sideways and diagonally in our thinking, our feeling, our learning and our lives.?

Time swirls about us endlessly; effortlessly sweeping us back to That Day in the Third Grade...That Picnic by the Lake..”

I hardly take in all the words, yet I stop when my eye catches a word I don’t know. She said “gyre.”?

I thought in my head of that spinning object with circles amidst circles. “Maybe I can find Sam a nice picture of one that is copyright free that she could use”, I thought to myself.

So I checked in that famous search engine only to find that a “gyre” is a weather system. So what was I thinking about? A gyroscope??

Check again. and yes up pops all those wonderful images of the object in my head.

Then I check what my friend Wikipedia has to say - one of those ever wise people.?

“A gyroscope (from Ancient Greek γ?ρο? g?ros, "circle" and σκοπ?ω skopéō, "to look") is a device used for measuring or maintaining orientation and angular velocity. It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation by itself. When rotating, the orientation of this axis is unaffected by tilting or rotation of the mounting, according to the conservation of angular momentum.”

Apparently, English sea captain John Serson invented one in 1743 as a level, to locate the horizon in foggy or misty conditions.

So all this journey of thought and I still haven’t finished reading the original email. Yet here I am writing and some of the fog has lifted so that I can go on with my journey.?

I am moved. I move.

When people complain about their inboxes being too full, I often wonder what is going one. I’m lucky enough to have an inbox that frequently brings me pleasant surprises.?

Today I have had a flurry of thought kicked off by one stray email.

“Did it spark joy?” would be the now famous response of Marie Kondo. Yes it did indeed. So I can sigh with relief that somehow I am on the right track - or at least travelling in good company.?
