Your Einstein AI in the Basement…..Is YOU!

A funny thing happened to me today! The LinkedIn algorithm forwarded me the profile of a Director of Mathematics at the learning company, Great Minds, Steven Shadel. God does things in strange ways…. you can never question!

For the past 18 months, I have been studying and studying what this “AI Movement” is all about, as on the face of it, it sounds difficult, like taking a calculus course. Ugh!

My conclusion: IT’S NOT!?

Here’s my TaleTellingTenet for today:

It was about 1956, in Lancaster, Ohio, Fairfield County, just about 25 miles southeast of Columbus. I was a Junior in Lancaster St. Mary’s High School, taught by Dominican nuns. They were knowledge teachers, not skill teachers. They made you understand complex areas like math and science so you could discuss them intelligently. I was always very good at math, even received the award in math upon graduation in 1958.

But this was 1956, and I was failing my Calculus course, and was really struggling with it. I had a nun teacher named Sister Laurita, who taught all advanced math and science courses. Most of us thought she was a tough teacher, took no prisoners, and pushed each of us to the brink as she knew what each student was capable of achieving.

One day as I entered the classroom, she came up to me and said, “Gregory, please stay after class as I want to speak with you.” Oh man, what have I done? My goose was cooked!

After class, here’s our conversation:

Greg, you know you’re failing the course, right? Right!

She continued, What’s the problem, as you’ve always been good at understanding math? I know, but I just can’t get this Calculus.

She came closer. Well, can you add? Yes! subtract? Yep! multiply? Sure! And you can divide too? Right!?

Well, those are the tools of Calculus, all linear, but Calculus is a derivative, a curve in life that uses those linear tools for answers and decisions. Because of that, to master Calculus you have to fight it and upskill your linear talent to pass the course, she concluded.

After studying Artificial Intelligence for the past 18 months, I have been surveying all my clients, relatives, and friends about whether they “understand AI?” The overwhelming majority of these smart people only know the Chat GPT side of AI, the linear side, but think they must be programmers, mathematicians, and statisticians to understand the derivative side.

That brings me back to the learning company, Great Minds, and the Director of Mathematics, Steven Shadel. You see, most people on this earth work for or own a small business, where AI could have the biggest impact on people and companies, but only if there are enough programmers and data scientists to go around.?

There is not enough, which means that small business will be stuck for the next 10 years with only knowing how to prompt Chat GPT instead of knowing and understanding how AI and machine learning can transform them, and their small business, into success.
