I wanted a watch. A decent watch, that cost a bit.
Not something crazy like £20,000 but enough to say "yea, I'm doing OK"
I haven't worn a watch for about 10 years thanks to my iPhone but I still wanted one, coz, you know...
I looked around, saw what I liked. I really don't like Rolex. I know the quality is amazing but visually, they do nothing for me and I was told that if I?wasn't looking at the watch as an investment, to go with what I really like the look of.
This is what I wanted to get.
Not too bling and not too OTT. I like it but I'm sure many of you don't and that's OK. It's me that was going to wear it.
I?promised myself that I would buy myself the watch when I?achieved certain things in my?coaching business.
Not get it on finance but walk in, pay for it in one hit and not on a credit card, and walk out the proud owner of IWC Pilot's "Le Petit Prince"
It costs £5,1000.
For me, that's a chunk of change. For some of you, maybe not, but for me it is.
I tried the watch on in London. The salesman talked a good game, told me the history of IWC and I felt pretty good with the?thing on my wrist.
But here's the weird thing. When I went to actually buy the watch, something held me back
I had just?read a book called "Stillness is the key" by Ryan Holiday and it had a section on ego.
Ryan said to think about the next time you go to buy something quite expensive.
Do you really need it and will it bring you joy and value?
And you know what?
I realised that it won't actually do any of those things for me. I don't wear a watch so I definitely don't NEED it.
Will it bring me joy?
Well for the first day it will but then it's just a watch. It tells me the time.
Will it provide me with value?
Not?really. I can find out the time by looking at my phone any second of the day for FREE. I don't need to spend 5k for that.
I?realised that I wanted the watch as a symbol of?success.

To show myself and others that I was enough.
My ego wanted the watch and it still does.
Even as I type this, the?little voice in my head said to me "just go and get the watch, why not?"
"YOUR EGO IS NOT YOUR AMIGO"
Many of us spend money on things to impress people that we don't?even like.
When you think about it, how crazy is that?
Now you won't see me selling all my possessions, moving to Tibet and meditating all day long as I contemplate my?life and the existence of the Universe.
Not just yet, anyway.
No. I like my life. But it's?something to think about isn't it?
If you ask yourself?those questions when you go to buy something and the?answer was yes, I need it, it will bring me joy and I value it, then hell yea, go and buy.
But very often, we know the?answer already.
As I said, something to?think about.
Have you ever bought something that was?ridiculously and you knew it?was your ego talking?
I know that you have.
Have a great day.
Gav :)
PS. Maybe one day I will get?the watch but it will only be when my?iPhone stops telling me the time.?Or my ego gets the?better of me.
Let's see shall we?

2 年Love this article, Gav Gillibrand! And yes, sometimes we tend to buy things just to show our "status" and to feed our ego.
