Your Earphones And Headphones As Health And Medical Devices – This And More News In Digital Health This Week

It was astonishing to see how US-dependent the whole digital health scene is. As the Thanksgiving weekend got closer, there was almost no announcement or news article in the domain. We all took a little break.?

Still, a video demonstrating a "Lung Disease Detection" tool that can classify X-rays into high-, low-, or no-pneumonia categories while highlighting affected areas made me wonder:

Is it better when AI makes a clear diagnosis based on the vast databases it has been trained on, or is it better just to highlight an area and provide an assessment (a probability or the right answer)?

I hope you will find the newsletter useful!

APPLE'S GREATEST CONTRIBUTION TO HUMANKIND IS IN HEALTH?

Apple CEO Tim Cook said this: "If you zoom out many years into the future, and you ask what was Apple's greatest contribution to humankind. It would be in health."

First of all, this technique is called backcasting: you do mental time travel into the future, choose an endpoint and then reverse engineer the steps needed to reach that from today. Second, do you agree with him? Shouldn't we already experience a healthcare revolution due to Apple's innovations to reach that goal? Isn't Apple's products too expensive and streamlined to make it happen?

If AI provides a probability score, I imagine that treatment algorithms (implemented within the healthcare system) would end up including a probability cutoff score to determine treatment selection or diagnostics, etc. So AI does work up, evaluation, and suggestion, then physician refers to human made treatment algorithm, and implements solution stated in algorithm. I don't see a way where AI won't lead to near total automation of clinical decision making for the majority of diseases.
