Your Display Is Not Wide Enough
It wasn't all that long ago when all of our home video displays were almost box/square shaped. Our current 16:9 (1.78:1 aspect ratio) shaped displays became commonplace in 2009. Before that, most displays were 4:3 (1.33:1 aspect ratio).
Did you know that a majority of the movies you watch are widescreen? Since September 16, 1953, with the release of the film THE ROBE, which included a brand new technology called CinemaScope, most movies have been in some wide-screen format ( Panavision , Cinerama , Techniscope, Todd-AO, VistaVision, and IMAX to name some formats). Though the CinemaScope film process hasn't been used since 1967, we continue to use the term "scope" as a reference to wide-screen content.
For the past 20 years, 18 of the #1 US box office grossing films have been super wide 2.35/9:1 aspect ratio. This means you've had to put up with those pesky black bars while enjoying these films at home.
According to Fandom.com, at the time of this posting, there are 1090 films in the 2.35/9:1 aspect ratio format.
For movie enthusiasts, a wide-screen display offers several advantages over traditional televisions or smaller screens, making the viewing experience closer to what filmmakers envisioned and ultimately more immersive and enjoyable. Here's why:
1. Wider field of view:
Widescreen displays, typically with aspect ratios greater than your typical 16:9 TV, mimic the format used in movie theaters (the aforementioned 2.39:1). This means you see more of the film with less black space at the top and bottom. This expanded view lets you take in the entire scene, capturing all the immersive content. [Do you remember seeing those notifications before some movies you watch at home that state the content has been edited to fit your screen? There ya go.]
2. Enhanced sense of immersion:
The wider screen fills your peripheral vision more effectively, creating a pleasurable immersive experience. You're less aware of your surroundings and more focused on the story unfolding on screen. This heightened immersive experience makes the film's sequences more exciting, and characters more engaging.
3. Reduced black bars:
Traditional TVs often have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to fit the movie's widescreen format. These bars can be distracting and take away from the viewing experience. A widescreen display eliminates these bars, allowing you to see the movie as it was intended to be seen.
4. Future-proof for modern content:
Most movies and TV shows are now shot in widescreen formats. Having a widescreen display ensures you're not missing out on any of the intended visuals and can fully appreciate the director's intent.

And, finally, you might be asking the question: If I have this wide-screen display, what about the content that wasn't created in a widescreen format? Good question!

In conclusion, for movie enthusiasts, a wide-screen display is a worthwhile investment that elevates the home theater experience. It provides a closer approximation of the cinematic environment, with a wider field of view, enhanced immersion, and improved picture quality. So, if you're passionate about movies and want to get the most out of your viewing experience, consider making the switch to a wide-screen display. You won't be disappointed!

1 年Hi Joey, I appreciate the clear and passionate way you presented this info! I am a self-described lover of 16:9 screens because I believe, in the absence of MadVR or other technology to negotiate aspect ratio changes, it's the superior format. I'm ready to admit I'm wrong, but I could use some answers first. 1) How do you handle video games in this format? No video games, that I'm aware of, are formatted for 2.35/9:1. Cropping the top and bottom of the image to fit the screen would result in lost GUI features, right? 2) Doesn't reformatting 16:9 content for a super wide screen just cut off the top and bottom portion of the image, at the end of the day? I know there are fancier ways of putting this, but still, without stretching the image and creating distortion, how do you reshape 16:9 to fit 2.35/9:1 screens? 3) Can systems like MadVR make all the same changes (including relocating subtitles) when using a source like Apple TV instead of Kaleidescape? The vast majority of content my clients consume is found in streaming services, not purchased or rented movies. I look forward to learning more from you, as you clearly know a ton about the subject.

1 年I cannot agree more Joey!!! Widescreen is how we see the world. It's why cinemascope was engineered in the first place. What are your thoughts on 24:9 aspect ratio? We are loving the MadVR and the NLS feature. Such a game changer for being able to handle multi aspect formats.
