IS YOUR DIET LEAVING YOU KNACKERED?

Yesterday my boys and I went to the allotment to dig and pick some homegrown fruit and vegetables, they love nothing better than eating food they have made an effort for.
It was the same when we were in Italy. Every corner we turned, homegrown produce was for sale and they absolutely loved getting involved in selecting the reddest apples or the biggest watermelon (which were HUGE by the way)! I am proud of the fact that my children would often rather pick fruit than trawl the sweet aisle, they are establishing habits that will serve them well throughout their lives.
This is yet another reason that Italians (and hopefully my boys) live longer, happier lives – the majority of their diet consists of fresh, unprocessed foods.
This is something that we should all be aiming for.
In fact, I was talking to a client on Friday who, of course, is focusing on cooking more of her food from scratch. When we first met, she constantly felt knackered and drained. But now she said she could not believe how much better she feels and how much more energy she has as a result! She also told me that she was performing much better in the gym which inevitably will lead to her burning more calories and losing more fat.
“I would always use time as an excuse not to cook but actually, I save time by being prepared now and more energy means I am more motivated!”
She went on to say that she had known for a long time that she should be reducing the ‘crap’ in her diet but she said that without the accountability, she just couldn’t seem to stick with it for more than a day or two! Plus, she is loving the personalised recipes I have provided her with as she doesn’t feel like she is cooking the same old stuff….
Now, I am not saying that you must or should only ever eat unprocessed food – that is unnecessary and would just be miserable. It should, however, be more of a priority for most of us in the UK. Yet our ‘obesogenic’ environment makes it a challenge. Cheap, convenience food is literally on every corner unlike in Italy where it would be hard not to eat fresh!
But this does not mean that it is impossible. I usually recommend that my clients aim for 80% of fresh, minimally processed food in their diet. That allows for flexibility, and a life, whilst promoting optimal health.
