Leza Klenk: Your desire to succeed determines your Success.
When it comes down to the pre-requisites to be successful, I realised that it's not measured by the level of intelligence or strength of an individual.
However, it may be contributed by the amount of effort one puts in, or the value of network surrounding that person. But then again, those points are related to the main factor - one's desire to want to succeed.
I started out as a stay home mother, after being married at 20. Having children, raising children and managing children were my daily routine, on top of the private tutoring I did in my own home for several years to make ends meet. I did not manage to complete my A Levels, nor were my parents able to fund my tertiary education. (some 12 years ago) I went to work after my teenage 'fun' life is over and reality kicks in, but I was unhappy with the role of being employed.
Just because, I had this crazy itch to create my own role and I was delusional enough to think I am made for something bigger.
So looking back at what I have done so far, to be where I am, I don't know how exactly I got here. I do not know how I got out of that home, into a corporate meeting, doing high profile presentations, got connected to VCs and investors, set up offices overseas, hire and manage people in the hundreds, and lectured universities.
I worked out that despite not having a Bachelors, I could and am still actively connected and doing research with the educational institutions. I worked out that when I did not know how a website is build, or a presentation deck should be put together, or how to present well in an important meeting - I made the effort to learn anyway. I worked out despite having three very young children, I could still scale my career up the ladder creating job opportunities to tens of people along the way.
I also remembered the times when contracts were lost, human resources management was unmanageable, and where monies were misused. I had gone through bad times with the business to have nearly lost everything, and I don't know how I miraculously got out of it. It was painful, but I don't know how the rewards always come anyway. I lost a couple of friendships but only to get connected with more beneficial ones.
All I know is that those hardships did not break me, instead at some turning point, I let it groomed me. The segregation between negativity and positivity exists only because our mind tells us there is a difference between the two.
A person with positive thoughts, sees problems as opportunities. He looks up from rock bottom, and he walks on in hope to find the light at the end of a tunnel. And until he finds that light, he keeps on walking.
If I didn't know anything, I'll find ways to learn how it is done. That is not because I am particularly intelligent or because I had far too much time in my hands, but because I had the strong desire to want to make it - no matter what.
I have gone through struggles and pain for so many years yet they did not diminish this entrepreneurial flame but instead made me wanting success even more. I've convinced myself that I deserve a reward from the years I've lost to this business, also assuringly know that every progress that accumulates will eventually take me to where I want to be.
For whatever reason, most importantly for my children, I do not accept anything else but success. Failure to me, is just another lesson learnt to take me closer to succeeding. The setbacks were teaching me to stop bad habits and look into implementing changes. The disappointments are shaping my character and emotions, to withstand bigger challenges in due time.
Then when the right time comes, success is inevitable.
Because I work towards improving, challenging myself and progressing with a desire to want to succeed so bad - that's the path I want to stay on. No matter what.
Don't say you want to succeed because someone else is, or some other people can. You don't say you want to succeed and think success comes tomorrow. Success comes with a lot of sacrifices. You must be willing to sacrifice your party nights, your favourite hobbies, your frequent holidays even your time with friends. Success sometimes is paid by draining your entire bank account, losing your entire circle of friends and staying away from luxuries and comfort.
And the people who were willing to lose, bleed, cry and go through that much struggles, are people who want nothing else but success. That they were willing to pay any price, because that is how bad they wanted to be successful.
So if you want success, start with asking yourself how bad you want it or you just kinda want it? Were you willing to give up the things you are comfortable with, and the people you have always spend time with? To what extent can you manage the heartbreaks when everything does not go your way?
Because change is the only constant in life, entrepreneurship is all about adapting to changes. So if you are ready to make those big shifts, just to have a taste of success, then entrepreneurship is definitely for hungry people like you.
With this, I wish you nothing else but success. Go hunt that down.
