As senior executives, we know that your CV is more than just a summary of your career, it’s your personal marketing tool and the key that can unlock new opportunities. Yet, all too often, we see CVs that lack that compelling spark, simply because they miss one crucial element: a well-crafted executive summary.
Let me share a quick story.
The Tale of Two Executive Summaries
I once coached an executive whose CV began with a summary that read,
“Experienced, hardworking, reliable.” and that was all.
While these adjectives might seem positive, they failed to capture his strategic vision and true impact. In stark contrast, another client revised his summary to:
"Transforming the financial sector with visionary leadership, driving an increase in operational efficiency and a 25% growth in revenue over 12 months. Proven track record in leading cross-functional teams, establishing strategic market expansions, and delivering measurable results across global financial portfolios."
The difference was night and day. That single change not only caught recruiters’ eyes but also paved the way for his next big role.
This story reminds us that a powerful executive summary can be the spark that ignites your career. To help you craft one that truly resonates, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:
