‘EMMA’ GOES HOME!???

A unique first edition of ‘Emma’, inscribed with a handwritten message from the author, has been sold for the record amount of ￡375,000!?It’s the highest sale price ever achieved for any printed work by the novelist.?

The London-based ‘Peter Harrington’, one of the world’s leading dealers in rare books, says it’s the only presentation copy of an Austen novel with a written inscription known to exist.??The book was presented by the author to her friend Anne Sharp, who was governess to her brother Edward’s children.

Sharp served as confidante, cheerleader and sometime critic of Austen’s works.

Here’s where the story gets even better – the American buyer has insisted that the three-volume edition stays in England!?And it is literally going home...

It will go on public display for the first time early next year at Chawton House in Hampshire - Edward Austen’s former home, which is now a research institution specialising in women’s writing.?It’s situated about 400 metres away from the cottage where Austen lived for the last eight years of her life – a large 17th-century house in the centre of the village of Chawton, which now houses the Jane Austen’s House Museum.

One man who understands the ongoing fascination with the works of those long-dead is Theatre Producer and Director CHRIS PICKLES, who will be ‘On The Couch’ with CR38IVES this Wednesday!

In 1968, a young Chris Pickles brazenly walked into the foyer of The Pier Pavilion Theatre in Southport and talked the director of the summer rep company into taking him on as an ASM/gofer.?Since then, he’s worked in theatre productions around the world - as an actor, writer, director and producer.

He will be talking to us about his amazing career in the theatre, and his current production of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ in Rome.
