All the really successful companies I’ve worked with have a set of core values that guide their business. They are published and reinforced at each quarterly and annual meeting.
These core values are also there to help get the company back on track should the company fall off.
The values are things like: Customer service where the customer cannot leave unhappy, delivering value over and above, and teamwork so no one person can fail. There are plenty of others. Typically, four or five core values will help keep the focus.
Reviewing some goals from some of my clients got me thinking; what are MY core values? What guides me? Most importantly, what keeps me in alignment with the kind of person I am or want to be?
I believe you cannot and should not be one kind of businessperson and another kind of person in your personal life.
It creates too much inner conflict. If we aren’t in alignment with our core values it creates stress and anxiety. And we don’t need any more of that.
So, here are four core values I try to live up to at work and at home:
Integrity: I have a high degree of integrity which includes being honest regardless of the outcome.
Dependable: I do what I said I was going to do. People can rely on me.
Empathetic: I try to be a good listener and understand what someone else is going through.
Curious: Being curious helps me grow and stay a lifelong learner.
Just like a business, living with these core values helps keep me in alignment and less concerned about how I will react to any given situation. It is freedom.
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: If you haven’t already, write out your core values and put them where you can see them every day. You’ll be calmer, in better alignment with yourself, and have less mental push and pull. If you’re willing, put them in the comments below so we can learn together. Remember, one hand washes the other and together they get clean.
If you think this would be helpful to anyone else who needs to bring their core values front and center, do them a favor, and please share this post. Thank you for watching. Have a really rewarding week. And I’ll see you next time.
