Complexity bias describes our tendency to prefer complicated explanations and solutions over simple ones. It is one of the most common biases discussed by social psychologists. Complexity bias can cause us to do two things. First, it causes us to think that complicated solutions are better than simple ones. Second, it makes us afraid of simple explanations for fear that they might be too obvious or not comprehensive enough.
Complexity bias is a pretty simple idea. Complex things are harder to understand than simple things. People tend to think that complicated explanations are better, just by virtue of being complicated. We may not realize it, but complexity bias can lead us astray in many ways: from choosing a shampoo to finding a mate.
Take jargon as an example in everyday life. Jargon is often unnecessary or redundant, but using buzz words makes us sound more important and intelligent. Complexity bias may be one reason why jargon is so popular with academics, politicians, and business leaders. It can also cause us to avoid explanations that seem too simple. Complexity bias makes us afraid of simple explanations for fear that they might make us not sound or look intelligent enough.
How about that math problems? Complexity bias is a big reason why math has a reputation as being difficult. Complex explanations for problems are much more likely to be wrong, but they seem so much more impressive. This can also contribute to the inaccessibility of mathematics for many people in society and the reason so many of us struggle with math.

How about our work and business life? When faced with decisions that might influence budgets, staffing, and overall growth of the business, the decision-makers are more likely to choose an option that seems more complex, even if it is not better. Complexity bias can cause us to seek out information instead of remaining content with what we already know. The more convoluted or difficult something seems, the more likely it is that people will assume there’s a good reason behind it.
The Exception: Complexity Bias does have some benefits when it comes to creativity. When using brainstorming techniques, adding complexity allows for greater flexibility in thinking and encourages group members to think outside of conventional boundaries. Complexity may be one way in which organizations stimulate creative thought processes.
So how can you fight against the negative aspects of complexity bias? Complex things aren't necessarily better than simple ones, and simple explanations aren't always good enough either. The best approach is to keep an open mind about all sorts of explanations, whether they are complicated or simple. Look at the evidence carefully instead of focusing on the presentation too much. If you're uncertain about who trust when it comes to complicated concepts, look for simple explanations.
Complexity bias is about the preference for complicated things, and it's something we all struggle with, so keep an eye out for this sneaky little heuristic and make sure you take a good hard look at the details before you accept anything as complete!

3 年For me complicated and complexity are different problems. Complicated means you are being nice and do not want to be clear about how bad something is; e.g., do you still love your spouse, will employees be paid this month, do you like what you do? Complexity is different. It is more of a self imposition when you want to appear smarter or not to be bothered by a person just now. It can also mean you have no clue of what is going on but should know if you bothered to look at it as it is, not how you want it to be. I avoid statements that announce they are about complexity or pose a complexity theory for managing complexity in complex situations: Example: In one of five recent court cases I was defending myself in, against university leadership, the judge stopped my presentation to say: "You are being too clear. I would advise you to avoid that and introduce some complexity so others will not understand what you say. Thereby you will have much less trouble in life and we will not need to be here." He eventually found me guilty of one of 25 charges after evidence was completed, and using complexity theory didn't allow a witness to show that one charge was also bogus. Plus he criticized a document as not being true as it had no erasures on it? It was a copy of the document so erasures were impossible see if they had existed. To simplify things I showed how he, the judge, was being paid $500/hour by the university as their secret agent, to find me guilty. The state's supreme court then used complexity theory to explain why that was okay, in this case against such a horrible person? Humans?

3 年Bob, today I read your post and am thinking how this applies to my business when as you well know we offer a great service at a price point that most don't believe to be realistic. Just because our price-point differs from the majority of our competition how do we utilize this principle or leverage it so that our clients understand that indeed the simplest solution is accurate. We share reviews and past success stories to lead them to the same conclusion but as Occam's razor would indicate when you hear hoofbeats think Horse! So how do we improve upon the correlation of when you learn about Gray Fox Realty's fee for service model, you think I see earlier success therefore I predict the same success in my experience?
