Becoming an ESL Teacher: The First Steps and Qualifications Involved
Each country has its own hiring processes and rules set by their Department of Education. It's important to research these carefully before applying for jobs abroad. For example, I’m currently in Saudi Arabia, where they have specific requirements for teachers. ???? Wherever you plan to go, make sure you understand the country's regulations for ESL teachers, from visa processes to educational qualifications. ??
When using recruiters, always make sure they are verified and legitimate. ?? Recruiters can be the best resource to help you get a job in the country you want to work in, but only if they are trustworthy. Research the company and read reviews before committing.
1?? Getting Qualified: TEFL Certificates and Degrees
The first step to becoming an ESL teacher is obtaining a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate from an accredited institution. ?? There are many options out there, but make sure to choose one that is recognized globally. While Teacher Records offers free TEFL certificates, many companies no longer recognize them due to the quality of the certification process. So, invest time and money in a program that equips you with the knowledge and skills to excel in the classroom. ?
I got my TEFL certificate from Global Language Training Limited in London. I will share the link to their courses below. ?? Getting the right and accredited TEFL certificate can be costly. For example, I completed a 150-Hour TEFL Master Course, which originally costs R7185.52, but I only paid R439.00 which was back on 08 Dec 2021. The price is still the same today. ?? (See attached images of my certificate and proof of purchase). So, don’t stress about paying big money! I’ve got you covered. ??

Avoid shortcuts like fast-tracked courses that promise certification in a few days. ?? Teaching is not just standing in front of a class—there’s real work behind the scenes. From preparing lesson plans ?? to creating PowerPoint presentations, teaching abroad requires a solid foundation in both content and classroom management.
2?? Types of Degrees Needed
If you’re a native speaker of English, most countries require you to have a bachelor’s degree in any field, along with your TEFL certificate. ?? However, if you hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), you have an advantage, as these degrees are specifically geared toward teaching. The hiring process in countries like Saudi Arabia, China, and Vietnam may be faster for you. ????

3?? The Application Process: Job Offers and Red Flags
When applying for jobs abroad, it’s crucial to know that no legitimate company will ever ask you to pay for a job. ?? If you’re successful, they’ll cover your visa costs, flights, accommodation, and other necessities. ?? If they ask you to pay for anything upfront, always get an email from HR detailing what you need to cover and how they will reimburse you. ?? Keep all your receipts and documentation handy companies should honor these reimbursements.
4?? Document Processing in South Africa: Costs and Timeframes
South Africans need to get several documents authenticated before teaching abroad, including police clearance certificates and degree attestations. ?? While it may seem overwhelming, it’s unnecessary to pay agents large sums. With patience, you can handle this yourself. ??
