Is your company taking advantage of Excel?

Excel is probably the most used tool in the world for data analysis. It is also the program chosen by many companies, including big corporations to automate daily tasks, which can save them time, money and many headaches caused by data entry errors should those applications be set up correctly. It comes to no surprise that Excel is one of the most demanded skills in the job market.

However, despite almost every company having Excel installed, I realize that they do not take advantage of the power and capabilities of this tool. This happens simply because business owners and professionals are not aware of what Excel can do for them. I know this because I used to be like that. I used Excel for 20 years without knowing that the formula VLOOKUP existed. I thought that SUM, CONT, IF and a few more formulas and features was al all that Excel could do. I didn't know what I didn't know. So I was not even looking for the information that could help me do things better.

I believe that creating awareness about the capabilities of Excel is the first step to open a new world of possibilities to many companies. The second step is to teach them the best practices when creating solutions in Excel so that those applications become an asset and not a source of trouble for their businesses.

With these ideas in mind, I gathered five Excel experts as the MS Excel Toronto organizing team and we will be sharing our best knowledge and advice to all of those in the community who are looking to learn more about how Excel can leverage their businesses and careers. The meetup group first meeting happened recently at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre Microsoft store in the in Toronto. The next meeting will be in June.

So true, not knowing the (new) capabilities of Excel keeps you (and your company) 10 years in the past!
