Is your company making these mistakes in the digital workplace?

For a lot of companies, that full and bustling office is almost a distant memory.?When the pandemic hit the world, businesses looked around at their empty offices and wondered how they would cope.?Now remote and hybrid contracts are commonplace as companies around the world have adopted the digital workplace.

All the fears and worries about not being able to operate without being penned in together.?The recruitment pool is wider, there are work/life balance benefits to employees.?But that doesn’t mean this adoption has been easy.?There are still some mistakes that are being made that can stop the new digital workplace from working fluidly.

Here are just a few examples of mistakes that you might be making.

Remote doesn’t just mean from home

One of the benefits to working remotely is that the employee can undertake their tasks anywhere.?They don’t have to be bundled off into their underused dining rooms or spare bedroom.?Some work at coffee shops, airports, or other places outside their home or office.

This is obviously frightening for businesses that hold a lot of customer data on their servers.?However, an inexpensive and convenient solution would be to use a business VPN to reroute their data through secure and encrypted servers.?It is easy to set up and allows for flexibility and security.

Frustrating communication tools

Online meetings can get frustrating if interrupted by a plethora of technical issues.?More than 80% of remote workers complain that they cannot get through a virtual meeting without someone needing to turn their camera off, or some other problem thwarting the meeting’s progression.

Don’t rush into investing in the first communication package you find.?Test them out first, read reviews.?Make sure you can get help to optimise the experience for all the team, and make sure all your employees have the right, working tools.

Poor cloud organisation

Virtual companies use a cloud-accessible environment to store all of their files.?File sharing is often important, but if it isn’t organised professionally, it can be frustrating for people trying to find specific folders.

Everyone is different and logic is not a universally translatable thing.?What might be logical to you might as well be written in Egyptian hieroglyphics for others.?There needs to be a consistent hierarchy and naming structure; and you should work to keep the file structure no more than two or three folders deep.

Remote workers are often left out of the conversation

If you’re the sort of company that has a consistent office residency with satellites of remote workers floating in and out, communication can get a bit lost.?If you see the same people over and over, it’s more likely that you are going to gravitate towards them for important conversations.

There is nothing more infuriating than turning up for a virtual online meeting and finding yourself lost.?It means that they are operating without key information that they need to contribute.?Also, efficiency can suffer when in-office workers make decisions for remote workers.?Your leadership should make use of their communication tools to keep everyone up to speed.
