A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. -John A. Shedd
Have you ever felt the pull of comfort: the safety of routine, the predictability of what you know? It’s reassuring, isn’t it? But let me tell you something: in a male-dominated industry like mine (engineering, water, and pumps) comfort is not an option.
As a woman engineer in this field, I’ve faced my share of challenges, from being the only woman in the room to proving my expertise in spaces where assumptions often precede introductions. But looking back, I realize that every major leap in my career happened when I stepped outside my comfort zone.
The Hard Truth About Comfort
Comfort feels like security, but in reality, it’s stagnation. It’s the silent career killer that stops us from reaching our full potential.
? It prevents us from asking for bigger projects.
? It keeps us from speaking up in meetings.
? It convinces us that we are “not ready” for leadership.
And for women in engineering? It’s even riskier.
In an industry where representation is still growing, the more we hesitate, the easier it is to be overlooked.
Discomfort = Growth
Some of my biggest breakthroughs happened when I felt uncomfortable:
?? Taking the lead on complex water infrastructure projects.
?? Walking into technical discussions where I was the only woman.

?? Speaking up in global conferences when my inner voice whispered, "What if you're not good enough?"
Each time, I faced that discomfort head-on, and you know what? I survived. More than that, I thrived.
I remind myself often: Ships are not meant to stay in the harbor. They are meant to sail into open waters, to face the storms, and to chart new paths. As engineers, as professionals, as women breaking barriers in STEM, we must do the same.
The Message for Every Woman in STEM
To all my fellow engineers, especially women in male-dominated industries:
?? Apply for that leadership role, even if you don’t tick all the boxes.
?? Speak up, even if your voice shakes.
?? Push for change, even when it’s uncomfortable.
The truth is, we are built for more than staying safe. We are built to innovate, to challenge, to make an impact. Growth never happens in comfort. It happens when you take the risk, raise your hand, and challenge the norms.
So here’s my challenge to you: What’s one uncomfortable step you can take today?

? I’d love to hear your journey! ??
