Is your chiller just chilling, or is it also saving the planet?

When buying a chiller, what's your priority?

  • Using a natural or low GWP refrigerant?
  • Keeping electrical running costs down?
  • Reducing CO2 production?

Check out these three chillers:

  • ?? IPE 201 (R454b – GWP 465)
  • ?? EKOE 201 (R290 – GWP 3)
  • ?? IPA201 (R410a – GWP 2088)

Let's compare:

  • ?? IPE201:?7kg of R454b40.4kw cooling at 7C10.8kw electrical energy
  • ?? EKOE201:4.1kg of R29040.1kw cooling at 7C10.8kw electrical energy
  • ?? IPA201:7.0kg of R410a44.7kw cooling at 7C16.4kw electrical energy

Considering a 2100hrs working year, with full refrigerant charge written off over 5 years, and average grid carbon at 200g/kwh:

  • ?? Natural refrigerant winner: EKOE 201 (R290-GWP3)
  • ?? Lowest running costs: IPE201 (R454b – GWP 465)
  • ?? Lowest CO2 production: IPE201 (R454b– GWP 465) - 5.2 tonnes per annum (compared to EKOE 201(R290-GWP3) - 7.1 tonnes and IP201 (R410a – GWP 2088) - 9.8 tonnes

When purchasing a chiller, carbon impact can be just as important as GWP. Prioritize efficiency and low running costs!

??? To FreeCool or Not? ???

Wondering about the benefits of free cooling? It's a simple concept: using a fan to pass air over a coil, dissipating heat while the coolant circulates through. With advancements in fan technology, these free cooling systems now boast impressive efficiency, often surpassing traditional chillers.

#FreeCooling #EnergyEfficiency

Many manufacturers now integrate free cooling coils into their chillers, though it's a challenging engineering task. Typically, achieving the same cooling level requires a larger coil compared to a standard chiller coil, leading to compromises in design.

#EngineeringFeats #CoolingTechnology

This often results in either an oversized refrigeration coil or a smaller-than-optimal free cooling coil, impacting overall efficiency. Consequently, standalone free coolers are increasingly popular, especially where space permits, offering significant electrical cost savings.

#EnergySavings #CostEffective

For effective free cooling, the ambient temperature should ideally be at least 5 degrees lower than the desired set point. This means that in many scenarios, free cooling can be effective for up to 75% of the year.

#TemperatureControl #EfficientCooling

Adopting adiabatic systems further extends the benefits of free cooling, minimizing water usage while ensuring safety standards are met. However, for optimal results, a separate free cooler is often recommended over a combined unit.

Discover what these ratings mean for your chiller.

  • R290 (Propane) is an efficient and effective Natural refrigerant. Unfortunately, as with most of its class, it is categorised as A3, which means it is a highly flammable compressed gas.
  • When looking at using a Propane chiller, one should ensure it comes with leak detection and extract fan to allow prompt extraction in the event the slightest leak is detected.
  • It should also be sited outside in an open area at least three metres from any electrical connections. This can therefore bring its own challenges.
  • R410a by contrast is classified as 2L which is non-flammable can be sited internally with no issues.
  • Then there are a number of hybrids between these the most R454b, which has a safety classification of A2L, meaning it is non-toxic and mildly flammable.
  • Still recommended for external installation in a well-vented area.R513a, with a safety classification of A1, indicating it is non-flammable and therefore suitable for internal locations.

If you're considering the installation of a new chiller and need guidance on selecting the right refrigerant based on safety ratings and your specific needs, reaching out for a professional consultation can help ensure you make the best choice for your situation.

5 Questions to have in your with your Directors and Teams

  1. What are our primary requirements for the chiller's capacity and performance?Delve into specifics such as the cooling capacity needed (in kW or tons), the type of application (e.g., industrial, commercial, process cooling), and any peak demand conditions. Understanding the precise requirements will help in selecting a chiller that matches the operational demands without over- or under-sizing.
  2. How important is energy efficiency for our operations, and what is our target efficiency rating?Discuss the significance of energy efficiency, possibly aiming for chillers with higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) or EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings. Energy-efficient chillers might have a higher upfront cost but can lead to significant savings in operating costs.
  3. Are there specific environmental or regulatory compliance factors to consider, such as refrigerant type?Consider the environmental impact, including the type of refrigerant (e.g., aiming for low GWP - Global Warming Potential refrigerants) and compliance with local, national, or industry-specific environmental regulations.
  4. What is our budget for the initial purchase and installation, including any potential for long-term operational savings?Discuss the available budget, factoring in not only the purchase and installation costs but also potential operational savings from energy efficiency, maintenance costs, and any available rebates or incentives for energy-efficient or environmentally friendly systems.
  5. What are our plans for maintenance and service? Do we have the capability in-house, or do we need a service contract?Assess the team's ability to perform regular maintenance and whether a service contract with the manufacturer or a third party is advisable. Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the chiller.
