Your chance to be a true impact investor
In 2012, I got a sweet consulting gig - help some incredibly well-respected nonprofits conduct a feasibility study for an impact investing fund that would be open to anyone to invest in and would support companies that were making a positive impact on the world but were unlikely to scale the way a Silicon Valley tech start up might.
A colleague and I spent months analyzing the landscape of existing impact funds, as well as businesses that such a fund might invest in. What we found is that there are basically no funds in the country that meet the following criteria:
- anyone can invest
- invest in steady-growth companies that are not expected to have a big "liquidity event" via a sale of the company
- willing to take a significant amount of risk
- focused on businesses owned by women and people of color who have the potential to be "Best for the World" companies measured under the B Impact Assessment
We found there are plenty of companies that could use investment from a fund like this and it could pay reasonable returns, but it doesn't exist. We recommended the creation of such a fund, but it never happened.
I got tired of waiting for someone else to do it, so I got together with my colleagues at LIFT Economy to launch a fund that meets these criteria. We have already raised over $300,000 and have some amazing advisors supporting us.
The Force for Good Fund is currently raising funds from investors on the Wefunder platform. The minimum investment is $1,000. There is less than a week left to jump in.
