Reflecting on the Tremendous Success of GivingTuesday in the USA and Ireland
GivingTuesday 2024 once again showcased the incredible power of generosity to unite and uplift communities worldwide. In the United States alone, an astonishing $3.6 billion was donated, a record-breaking achievement and a 16% increase from 2023’s $3.1 billion total. This milestone brings the cumulative amount donated in the US since GivingTuesday’s launch in 2012 to over $18.5 billion.
An extraordinary 36.1 million people participated in GivingTuesday across the US, contributing not only through financial donations but also through volunteering and countless acts of kindness. This unprecedented participation highlights the enduring spirit of community and solidarity, even amid global challenges. From small local efforts to large-scale international initiatives, the day underscored the limitless potential of collective giving.
Asha Curran, Chief Executive Officer of GivingTuesday, aptly noted: “Generosity isn’t just about money—it’s about connection and community. In a world that can feel increasingly divided, we’re seeing people unite through simple acts of kindness that have profound ripple effects.”
Here in Ireland, GivingTuesday was marked with inspiring acts of generosity and collaboration across communities and businesses. Irish companies, individuals, and nonprofits embraced the day, harnessing the Power of People (#POP) to support social impact in their local areas. Whether through donations, volunteering, or sharing advocacy campaigns, GivingTuesday Ireland became a platform for showcasing the profound generosity of Irish people and businesses alike.
Aoife Rooney , Senior Customer Success Manager at GoFundMe, remarked: “As the most generous country on GoFundMe, Ireland leads the world in its power to change lives. GivingTuesday exemplifies the spirit of generosity of the Irish people and provides businesses with the opportunity to make a real difference to their communities.”
From coffee mornings to fun runs, and from donating goods to signing petitions, small acts of kindness were amplified across the nation, proving that collective giving truly creates lasting impact.
áine Myler, CEO of Charities Institute Ireland, highlighted the importance of GivingTuesday for Irish businesses: “Irish companies already make a significant impact by contributing time and money to the charity sector. GivingTuesday is a fantastic platform to share these stories, inspiring others to do good and strengthening company culture, ESG goals, and brand loyalty in the process.”
As GivingTuesday Ireland reflects on this year’s success, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to our friends Rebecca Markey , Tara Corristine and Miriam Atkins at IFP Media , whose partnership with Charities Institute Ireland was instrumental in ensuring the movement’s success across the country. Their expertise, support, and commitment played a pivotal role in amplifying the impact of GivingTuesday Ireland, and we are deeply grateful for their collaboration.
We are also excited to announce that we hope to calculate and share the total amount donated across the country in the weeks ahead. This will further highlight the extraordinary contributions of Irish communities and businesses, solidifying Ireland’s reputation as a leader in global generosity.
