The topic of focus this month is "Leadership." On October 14th,?I am excited to share something truly transformative with you - our upcoming Positive Intelligence Leadership Mental Fitness Bootcamp.?This bootcamp is designed with you in mind, whether you're a seasoned leader or just starting your leadership journey. Now it's time to celebrate a recent accomplishment and share a story with you! I've kept this one a bit hush-hush until this past week because, to be honest, I was hit with a bit of "Imposter Syndrome." Here it is...as of last Saturday, I am officially an Adjunct Faculty at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).?

??A few months ago, I was asked for my resume by Dr. Peter Ricci, who, as Director, heads the?Hospitality and Tourism Management Program, located in the Department of Marketing within the College of Business at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Ricci sent my resume to FAU's Assistant Director and Program Manager for Executive Education without any promises. I was later interviewed by both and offered this opportunity to teach the Certificate in Event Management Fall and Winter semesters.??

You may be wondering why I was hit with a bit of "Imposter Syndrome."??? I can tell you that it wasn't because I was not well prepared. In actuality, I have unknowingly been preparing myself for this moment which is why I want to share that brief story with you.

In 2013, I applied to get into the Certified Meeting Management (CMM) program after starting my first company, Be Productive Meetings & Events, and being in the meetings and events industry for over 10 years. The program requires seven (7) years of experience, with 3 in management and 2 with P&L responsibility. I was accepted and, several months later, received my CMM accreditation. This accreditation is known as the "Master" in the industry and prepared me for the strategic management of events and business in general. In 2014, when I realized that I missed the coaching and mentoring of my teams, I became a Certified Leadership Coach, wondering how these two would tie together. I loved coaching so much that in 2017, I decided to focus on my coaching practice (Be Productive Coaching ), and although I continued working with a few clients planning their meetings and incentives, I had a five-year hiatus from attending any industry conferences or events. It wasn't until 2020 when the pandemic hit, that I came back actively into the Hospitality & Meetings industry. I was devastated by the number of colleagues and friends furloughed and laid off, and I started working with them to help them transition into other jobs and industries. When I saw that MPI? ?was moving its annual WEC conference to November 2020, I raised my hand to coach at that conference in Grapevine, TX. Not knowing if it was safe to fly, my husband and I drove to Texas from Miami just so that I could coach at the conference. Since then, I've been focused on bringing humanity back to the Hospitality & Meetings industries by speaking, attending conferences, and training individuals on Mental Fitness. What does all this have to do with becoming an Adjunct Faculty? Well, in the five years I took the hiatus, I've been focused on coaching, teaching, and facilitating, all while working with two main clients for Be Productive Meetings & Events. In reality, I've never been removed from the industry, and although I was away from in-person industry events for five years, I've returned in a different capacity. This new capacity has given me a 360 understanding of everything and allowed me to bring this experience and expertise to my students. The timing couldn't be more perfect. Now that I am teaching this certificate program, I plan on incorporating my Mental Fitness techniques so that this new generation of meeting and events professionals are equipped to handle the stressors that come from this exciting industry.??

So my "Imposter Syndrome" came from my need to be a high achiever and the thought that I must be the "best at what I do" and questioning if I was truly prepared. It also came from some old limiting beliefs that still try to sneak in occasionally (more on those later.) I am grateful to have my Positive Intelligence tools to help combat my inner critic's nasty voices. Some tools I'll share with my students are the free Saboteur Assessment and the PQ (Positive Intelligence) Score assessments. These assessments help us benchmark our current mental fitness and allow us to understand the root cause of the inner critic.
