Hi Reader,
One thing I’ve learned over the years is this: no one will advocate for your career as strongly as you can. It’s easy to assume that your manager knows what you want or that they’ll naturally push you toward new opportunities. But the truth is, they’re managing their own career, other teammates, and their bosses, too. It’s a lot to keep track of!
If you want your career to grow, you need to take charge. Don’t just ask for what you want once and expect results. Follow up, keep the conversation going, and make sure your goals are clear to those around you.
?? Tip of the Day
Today’s advice is simple: Don’t ask for something just once.
It might feel uncomfortable and like you’re bothering the other person, but asking for things more than once (tactfully) will help you stay top of mind and make sure your request doesn’t fall through the cracks. It may also be helpful to that person who’s juggling a thousand other things!
Here’s an example of how that might look:
Your manager mentions needing a few leaders to help with a new project and asks everyone to send her a note later if they want to participate.
You send the note.
Next time you have a 1:1, mention it again with a script like:
“I wanted to check in on when you’ll decide who gets to be part of the project. I’m really excited about it!”
Now you’ve reminded your manager you want it and you’ve shown genuine excitement. It’s a positive result all around!

1 个月Love this. The not asking more than once is something I feel like I'm still working through (lots of stuff with rejection). But such a wise reminder.
