Your Business and... Pirates? ????

What?a 19th Century Pirate Can Teach a CEO...

When business owners set out to build and scale, the first thing many do is hire more people,?hoping?that those people have the right experience, the proper knowledge, the right stuff.

They put them into place and cross their fingers,?hoping?for the right outcome.

This "Hail Mary" approach generally leads to disappointment.

There is a solution, but it requires self-reflection and a clear understanding of how you define success.

In an odd way,?thinking like a pirate can be helpful.

Pirates of the 19th century ?were probably the earliest entrepreneurs…

They operated counter to custom, process, and sometimes, the law...

They were innovative and agile and amassed much power because?they knew about every facet of their "business."

They knew about survival…

They knew about sailing...

They knew about markets...

They knew the law and how to circumnavigate it.

Captains were selected because?they were respected, not because they were feared.

And on a ship full of murderers, bandits, and thieves,?everybody was aligned with the mission.?Their roles and duties were clearly defined by their abilities and knowledge.

Successful captains could communicate the desired outcome to all ranks of shipmates. It was a captain's experience, not might, that garnered respect and led to victory.??

Fast forward to?today, many modern-day CEOs ignore the important things that drive a business to victory.

The winning entrepreneurs, like the pirates, know the critical information about marketing, sales, finance, and operations as they bring on their crew.

It allows them to:

  • Know what to look for in a candidate
  • Communicate the desired output
  • Judge if somebody is doing a good job
  • Manage them appropriately
  • Know the significant KPIs that will deliver an excellent outcome

Scaling a business s complicated.

And when you’re building a team, you quickly discover that one person's definition of success is entirely different from another person's definition of success.

Like the pirates, you need to know what the ideal outcome looks like...

You're the one who needs to communicate the mission in a way each person can understand.

You're the one who has enough knowledge to lead in a way that earns respect, not mutiny.??

So while it's common to view these 19th-century pirates as trouble-makers - they did leave a treasure of knowledge behind that can help?today's business owner navigate the rough seas of?today's competitive landscape.
