Your business needs e-commerce by end of 2020

In 2018 I told everyone who would listen that if you were a big company that you really needed to invest in e-commerce because most projects take at least 2 years for enterprises to migrate. Now in 2020 when we are in lockdown that is exactly the case. All businesses are in lockdown so the enterprises that can sell online and ship goods to you are surviving during this crisis.

Now that it is 2020 and you are suffering losses because you don't have e-commerce but it is not time to give up. You can still have some form of e-commerce by end of the year and get some revenue into your business. You can still do something to start the process, whether it is a quick Shopify store to sell a couple key products that could be up in a couple weeks or a larger initial MVP that could be deployed in a couple months, or a long term strategy to get into a full e-commerce solution. The point is to start now.

Here are a few examples of out of the box ideas for your business:

Hair Dressers

You need to cut your hair in person however there are a few alternatives you can do:

  1. You can sell accessories online like clippers, scissors, nail polish.
  2. You can sell virtual sessions where you walk them through tips to trim their hair. It would not be as good as a real hair cut but helping them with a trim here and there could make all the difference.
  3. YouTube videos with ads turned on. How about doing a couple videos where you talk about different accessories and how to choose them. How do you know your best nail polish color. Then share the link with your clients. It is about the social connection. People crave social time. Go live on Youtube so people can chat with you and then the video can be seen later with ads.

Nail Salons

  1. Similar idea to Hair Dressers, you can sell supplies like nail polish and offer tips on which ones to buy.
  2. You can sell virtual sessions where you help them choose the best color to match their complexion, eye color etc.

Vehicle Repairs and Services

  1. Vehicle servicing kit and online guidance. For simple repairs you could ship the specific part for their car and provide advice. Thanks Mateen Shaikh for the suggestion.

Food

  1. Online Farming - Equipment, training, and monitoring. Thanks Mateen Shaikh for the suggestion.The idea here would be that people would purchase the seeds and supplies based on the places they could farm. For example do you have window sills, a yard, a balcony? If so then there are options on what equipment you can buy to be self sustainable for certain supplies so you can last longer in the lockdown. After that you can still save money and the environment by producing locally.

Medicine, Meditation, etc.

  1. Online doctor, virtual doctor, Physiotherapy tips and advice sessions. Thanks Mateen Shaikh for the suggestion.
  2. Some places that do meditation or massage are doing online sessions. You join the session and then they guide you through self mediation or massage based on your needs.

For pretty much any industry you can do a virtual session and help someone do thing themselves. Thanks Mateen Shaikh for the suggestion.

Yes, it is a right time for businesses to go online if not. And try to satisfy customer needs through ecom platform and other channels. The examples you discussed in the article are really thoughtful. ????
