Your Business Is Like Banana Bread

Day 13 of being quarantined, being overly sensitive about not wasting food and 3 very ripe bananas sitting on the counter, begging to be used – so I decided to make banana bread.
I googled recipes, I messaged my friend Josephine who makes the best banana bread ever, and I stumbled upon this recipe online.
I love this recipe because it reminds me of business.
The author firmly believes you should be able to make banana bread anytime, anywhere – and that your recipe should be forgiving enough that even if you don’t have all the ingredients, you can still make it work.
Obviously, you need flour and bananas, but you can make some serious substitutions if you’d like…!
Business is that way too.
Business And Banana Bread: No ONE Perfect Recipe
Too many people are looking for the perfect formula and framework to grow their business, build a website, execute a marketing plan, etc.
The recipe is forgiving.
While you do need some elements in place, such as something for someone to buy and a way to accept payment, but the rest of the recipe is pretty forgiving:
- You can upset a customer and make it up to them.
- You can market the wrong way and figure out how to improve.
- Or, you can charge too little and raise your fees.
- And you can make a basic website and improve as you go.
Be Willing To Change
In today’s world, much is changing in terms of how we operate businesses. There is no perfect recipe that guarantees you’ll get the perfect outcome all the time because your business is serving people and people change.

That’s what happened with that banana bread recipe, actually. I mashed two recipes together and made my own recipe (you can find my recipe here: Lisa’s Banana Bread Recipe). It was delicious. It’s proof that you can change things up and still end up with an amazing result.
Don’t be afraid to change things up in your business either. Use what you have and serve your clients well. You may not have the fancy bells and whistles, you might just have one tool at your disposal – use it to serve them and fix their problems.
Your customer’s wants, needs and problems are not the same as they were yesterday. If you follow the exact same recipe as you once did, you may not end up with the same tasty outcome you expect.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with the recipe. Lean into the journey, and embrace the creative liberty you’ve been given in this thing called entrepreneurship.
