Is Your Brand Storytelling Authentic?

Is Your Brand Storytelling Authentic?

In all my years working in marketing, one thing rings true—heart matters more than the right words. The right words are mission-critical, but without heart and authenticity, they ring hollow.

However, when you can connect your why to your business and take action from a place of joy, people sense it. That’s when they get behind your mission and sales start rolling in.

All you have to do is nurture your audience and make them feel something while avoiding the traps of selling to a cold audience and delivering value without selling. Broken down like that, authentic brand storytelling may (or may not) sound like a tall order, but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone.

You know who is great at it? Humans of New York. Brandon Stanton does an exceptional job of connecting story to authenticity, creating raving fans along the way. And that’s exactly what you want when you tell your brand story.

But how do you connect that lived experience to your business and marketing?

You need to understand:

  • The different types of stories
  • The impact of visual stories
  • How to connect your audience with your story

From there, it can be as simple as finding inspiration and sharing your experiences.

With that in mind, brand storytelling and story marketing is less about creating your brand story than about defining your brand experience and identifying stories to help you illustrate it—sometimes pulling them right from the photo app on your phone.

All this sounding great??

This is one of the hardest types of stories for me. Some people have a gift for this. You can have the story but if your heart’s not injected into it, it’s as you say, hollow.
