Maybe it's because I've celebrated a birthday recently, or maybe it's because everyone is talking about it right now, but I've been thinking about spirituality:
?
The connection I feel—or don't feel—to something greater, something bigger than myself, and recognizing this same presence in others ??
?
Recent research by Dr. Lisa Miller sheds light on the profound impact that sustained spiritual practices can have on our mental health. Her studies show that individuals who regularly engage in spiritual activities develop thicker cortices in brain regions associated with perception, reflection, and orientation—areas that are often thinner in people suffering from recurrent depression. This neurobiological evidence suggests that spirituality could serve as a powerful protective factor against depression and other mental health challenges.

In other words, spirituality and spiritual practices like praying, meditating, being in nature, volunteering, or expressing oneself through art are profoundly good for us and act as a buffer against mental health issues.
An additional reason why I may have contemplated spirituality recently is because Miller's studies also concluded that when a mother shares a spiritual life with her child, that child is five times less likely to suffer from depression. Wow.

While part of my spiritual practice is it's contemplation as a whole, I know and rest assured that mums have incredibly strong super powers to protect their children.

And if I ever feel lost in a results-driven word full of digital consumerism, meditation or simply seeing the world through my child's eyes sparks my connection to something bigger than me again.

The way a kid marvels at the vastness of a tree ?? The joy they derive from splashing in water for hours on end. That is "It".
