?? Have you ever felt the sharp jolt of whiplash on a roller coaster, the daze from a hard hit on the football field, or the shock of a fall that left your head pounding? You’re not alone.
These seemingly minor incidents could be silently causing concussions, with over 50% going unnoticed or untreated. Each year, millions suffer concussions, many of which lead to severe, lasting impacts on brain health, including depression and suicidal tendencies.
?? What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth, resulting in brain dysfunction and various symptoms like headaches, confusion, dizziness, and memory problems. The brain is a delicate organ that floats in cerebrospinal fluid within the skull, making it susceptible to injury from sudden movements or impacts that can cause it to collide with the skull's inner walls.
?? The Scope of the Problem: Head Traumas Big and Small
?? While we often associate brain injuries with severe incidents, even minor impacts can cause significant damage. For instance, a slip in the shower, a minor car accident, a fall during ice skating, or a sudden jolt while riding a bus can all result in concussions.
?? These injuries may not always present immediate symptoms, leading to delayed or misdiagnosed conditions. For example, in military settings, sonic waves from explosions may cause silent trauma without any direct impact, adding another layer of complexity to the issue.
?? The Invisible Impact: How Head Traumas Affect Mental Health
?? Even small, repetitive head injuries can accumulate over time, increasing the risk of cognitive impairment, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
?? The CARE Consortium, a major research initiative started in 2014, has shown that concussion risk comes not only from major impacts but also from cumulative smaller ones and individual susceptibility. The study emphasizes the need for personalized approaches to recovery and treatment because individuals vary widely in how they respond to concussions due to genetic and biochemical differences. This research has led to better strategies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention for athletes and military personnel alike.(CARE Consortium)(Military Health System)?(CARE Consortium)
?? Despite advances in concussion awareness, treatment and recovery often receive less attention.?Standard care involves rest until symptoms resolve, but studies show that symptoms from subsequent concussions take longer to resolve, and long-term risks increase even in those who appear to return to baseline. This indicates that the brain may not be fully healed even after symptoms like headaches or nausea resolve. Understanding these impacts helps in taking proactive steps to protect brain health and seek effective treatments.
??? Moving Toward a Solution
?? Get Well With Us is a collaboration between me and Dr. Tammy Gutierrez, (Dr. G) a Board Certified Family Medicine Doctor with advanced training in Functional Medicine. Our goal is to bring Functional Medicine concepts to everyone in a simplified, personalized and affordable way so you can learn what it takes to enjoy a healthier life longer.
?? We believe that the right answer is to help the brain heal more effectively, so that those long-term mental health and neurologic consequences can be avoided or minimized. By supporting mitochondrial health, clearing out inflammation, providing adequate nutrients, and restoring the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, the goal is not to simply make people more aware of the risks of head trauma, but to prevent those risks from becoming a reality.
?? Introducing Our Concussion Workshop
?? As we head into back to school and begin the fall sports season, Dr. G and I have designed a program that gives you access to the same protocols she uses in her Functional Medicine practice that address the root causes of dysfunction in concussion and traumatic brain injury. This vital information is now accessible to everyone!
??? We are presenting this protocol LIVE in an online workshop on July 30, 2024, at 6 PM ET, with time allowed for you to ask questions and get real-time answers. Plus, the workshop will continue to be available as an online resource with videos and handouts on our website after the event for those who have registered and those who could not attend live.
?? This is your chance to gain invaluable knowledge and tools to heal and protect your brain health effectively. Don't miss out—secure your spot today and take the first step towards a healthier, more resilient brain.
?? Workshop Highlights
???Boosting Nutrients for Brain Repair:?Discover the essential foods, vitamins, and minerals needed for brain repair and recovery, ensuring you have a strong foundation for optimal brain health.
???Lowering Brain Inflammation: Chronic inflammation can impede brain function and healing. We show you how to reduce inflammation through diet, healthy habits, and over-the-counter remedies, promoting a healthier brain environment.
??Restoring Mitochondrial Function:?Mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of our cells, produce ATP, the cell’s main energy source. After brain trauma, damaged mitochondria can lead to reduced energy production and increased oxidative stress. By supporting mitochondrial function, you can improve your brain's energy levels and overall health, enhance cellular repair and promote overall brain health, aiding in a more effective recovery process.

???Supporting Gut Healing: A healthy gut is critical for brain health. Our workshop explains how head traumas can cause food sensitivities by increasing intestinal permeability, often referred to as "leaky gut syndrome." You will learn effective strategies to heal your gut, preventing future food sensitivities and other complications that can arise from head trauma.
??? The Benefits: Preventive Tools for Brain Resilience
Beyond healing, our workshop will equip you with tools to increase brain resilience. Whether you or a loved one are involved in high-risk activities such as sports, military service, or are simply concerned about falls, these preventive measures can make a significant difference in protecting your brain health.
