Your Body Is Begging for More H2O!

The Thirst Is Real

Welcome to the first leg of the wellness challenge. This month we are focusing on increasing our water intake. As we all know, water is essential for life. However, it seems like everyone forgets its impact on health, wellness, and performance.

Hydration is often taken for granted even when we know how important water is to our health. In preparation of this month’s challenge, let’s talk about the benefits of staying hydrated, how water interacts with our bodies, the different types of water available, and some easy ways you can increase your water intake.

Why Water Deserves a Trophy

Not only does water help us achieve our wellness goals, staying hydrated will keep you from turning into a human raisin. If your body was a sports team, water is the MVP in nearly every function of your body. Think of it as the oil that keeps your engine running. Proper hydration keeps you energized, focused, and ready to tackle whatever life throws your way.

Here’s what else water does behind the scenes:

  • Boosts Brainpower:?Dehydration = foggy brain. Keep drinking, and watch your brain come alive!
  • Regulates Appetite:?most of the time, hunger is just thirst in disguise.
  • Improves Immunity:?Hydration helps your immune system function correctly. Feeling sick? Well, that’s probably because you’re not hydrated!

Have you ever felt sluggish or grumpy, only to realize you hadn’t had water in hours? Think of water like fuel for a happy mood and steady energy.

H2-Oh Yeah! What Water Does in Your Body

Water doesn’t just sit around, it’s got places to be and body parts to see! Once you drink it, water is absorbed and starts working its magic. Especially if you’re active, staying hydrated can make or break your workout. Want to last longer, push harder, and bounce back faster? Drink up!

  • Joint Lubrication:?Water’s like the oil for your knees and elbows, making movement smooth and comfortable.
  • Temp Control:?Sweat it out! Water helps your body cool down when you're working hard.
  • Nutrient Ride Share:?Think of water as the cab for all your nutrients, getting them where they need to go.
  • Detox Dynamo:?Flushing out the waste (literally), it helps your body detox through sweat and, well, bathroom breaks.

Think about your post-workout routine. Have you noticed a difference in muscle recovery when you’re hydrated?

Water’s Greatest Hits:

Water isn’t just...water. I don’t care what anyone thinks, water DOES NOT taste the same. Believe it or not, each type brings a unique twist. Here’s my favorite lineup:

  • Spring Water – Spring water is like nature's version of filtered water. It flows from the ground naturally.
  • Mineral Water – Mineral water is just plain water from underground reservoirs and is naturally loaded with calcium, magnesium.
  • Filtered Tap Water – Filtering your tap water removes most of the gunk. Plus, it’s cheap, efficient, and makes you feel like a sustainability hero.
  • Coconut Water – Coconut water hydrates and is a great source of potassium and electrolytes.
  • Rainwater – Unlike tap water, rainwater hasn’t been chlorinated or fluoridated (unless you live somewhere with pretty funky air). This makes it a “purer” form of water in terms of additives. Rainwater is also eco-friendly and resourceful. But be sure to filter it to remove any extra ingredients from the sky.?

Not All Water Is Created Equal:

Not all water is created equal due to variations in source, mineral content, and treatment processes. That is why choosing high-quality water can impact hydration and your overall well-being, making it essential to understand these differences. Try to avoid these:

  • Flavored or Sweetened Waters:?Hidden sugars and additives can cancel out water’s true benefits.
  • Alkaline Water:?Some love it, but too much can throw off your body’s pH balance.
  • Bottled Water (When Unnecessary):?It’s convenient but not always eco-friendly or better than most tap.

Have you experimented with different types of water? Notice any changes in how you feel? Can you taste the difference?

Simple Hacks to Increase Your Water Intake

Life gets busy, and sometimes water just doesn’t make it on our “to-do list”. But don’t worry, I have some sneaky ways to hydrate without it feeling like a chore:

  • Start Each Day with Water: Always begin your morning with a glass of water. Yes, even before the caffeine fix!
  • Set Reminders: Technology is your friend. Use your phone or a hydration app to set reminders every hour to drink water.
  • Keep a Bottle Handy: Carry a reusable water bottle with you everywhere so water is always within reach.
  • Infuse with Flavor: Add natural flavors like lemon, cucumber, or berries to make drinking water more enjoyable.
  • Track Your Intake: Use a journal, app, or even the markings on your water bottle to monitor how much you’re drinking.
  • Sip Before Meals: Drink a glass of water before each meal. Bonus tip: it can also help with portion control.
  • Set Goals: Break down your daily water goal into smaller, achievable targets. For example, aim to drink half by noon and the rest by dinner.
  • Join a Water Challenge: HINT HINT!!! Join or start a hydration challenge (like this one) for motivation and accountability with friends or colleagues.

What’s your biggest water-drinking hurdle? Could any of these tips work for you?

Final Thoughts

Drinking enough water doesn’t just make you feel better, it helps you perform better, think clearer, and even recover faster. Small sips every day can lead to big wins for your health and wellness. When was the last time you checked in on your water habits? As always, stay healthy and STAY HYDRATED friends!

I actually was headed to the ER and I was letting my mom know so that someone knew where I was. She asked a simple question: when was the last time you had water? I realized I hadn’t drank any since I couldn’t remember. That’s not like me, but, I turned around, drank a bunch of water and took a nap. Come to find out what I needed was water! And not plastic water (let’s go back to eco), but clean filtered water. Fantastic topic!! ????
