So, it's time to talk EVs. Thanks to S&P Global and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries for the data, it's really helpful. This piece draws from my story for CarExpert.com.au linked here.

Sales of BEVs have more than tripled in Australia across the first 9 months of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.

The latest data shows 65,743 electric cars registered between January 1 and September 30, up 202% YTD.

This equals a 7.3% share of the market, but more importantly 10% of passenger car and SUV sales – the areas where there’s actual buyer choice.

There are now 50 individual EV nameplates on sale from 24 different manufacturers, with a heap more coming as you can read here.

Tesla dominant with 37,997 sales. Elon’s company single-handedly accounted for 58% of all EVs sold in Australia. Model 3 outsold Toyota Corolla and Model Y outsold Toyota RAV4.

BYD running second having sold 8706 Atto 3s, ahead of MG ZS EV (2356 sales, 10% of all ZS models sold), Volvo XC40 Recharge (2275 , 50% of all XC40s sold), and Polestar 2 (1789).

This means the top 6 EVs YTD are all produced in China, which has established itself as world-leader in critical minerals, through to production and export.

While Tesla, BYD, MG, and Volvo top the charts by brand, there are other manufacturers with larger line-ups, led by Mercedes-Benz with 9 x EVs.

As we have become accustomed to, there are substantial differences in the rates of EV take-up in Australia depending on State or Territory, as the table below shows.

Tesla is the only automotive brand to sell new motor vehicles in significant numbers in Australia that?does not provide sales data to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Keen to know the accuracy of these numbers?
