"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as, by the way, your mind looks at what happens."
Kahlil Gibran's words speak so much about the discretion required in choosing our attitude in life! The perspective we own while we respond to challenges in life is key. Our Attitude is such an important element for us to lead a meaningful life.
Attitude is a matter of choice. Authenticity, Humility, Warmth & Gratitude are all choices!
?When I ask what is Attitude? Our behavior & interactions with people are invariably the first answers. Yes, to an extent. Additionally, it is also our perspective in facing life & its challenges.
This slide by PowerShow.com says it all. What is visible of the Iceberg on the surface is the 'What' and 'How' of our behavior. To alter that is to go deeper into the 'why' of our behavior! Once you go deeper and ask yourself questions you will become aware of yourself, your influences, the behavior to alter, and why you behave the way you do.
An answer to that "WHY" is in the 3 'E' factor :
Environment: Our upbringing, the influences of our immediate & extended family, our friends, and the society we grow up in, hugely shape who we turn out to be. The value system that is ingrained in us happens in the early years very organically.
Education: So many of the unwritten rules in society we learn on our own! Nobody sits us down to teach us that. How do we co-exist in society? How do we share space? That is education in the true sense of the term, not the degrees we collect. The truly educated, according to me, are not always the ones with the highest degrees but the ones who have aced the University called Life.
Experience: An amazing teacher who gives us the exam first and then expects us to learn the lesson. A beautiful teacher, who clearly shows that the lesson need not be your test always. It can be somebody else's test where you can learn the lesson if you are willing. The pandemic has been our biggest teacher on the perks of #MyWFH . On #NationalworkfromhomeDay2022 , it has been an amazing way to understand minimalism and mental wellbeing. No theory would have prepared us for this. No two experiences have been the same for us or for anyone around us.
As we move ahead in life, it becomes important to tap into these aspects of our life to find out what we need to alter in our perspective. These three "E"s answer an important question of the 'why' of our behavior.
The more we work on our attitude the more we will see the shift in the inner peace, and that the connection with the inner you is far stronger. So the next time you are in a moral dilemma, make sure you question your WHY?
Being a storyteller, the podcast "U n' I with Rashmi Shetty" was born to collect inspiring stories of ordinary people who went beyond themselves to make a difference in the world around them... "Ordinary folks, Extraordinary lives". Have met 70 amazing storytellers. A common factor, I saw in their stories was an amazing Attitude adopted when life threw a challenge or a truth to make a difference. It was not about their glory but about working with a bigger purpose. What drove them, was a quest to start with their individual life. Looking inward and asking the important question of the WHY, gave them a purpose to understand how they are the chosen ones!

This conversation with Ferose is where he shares how he learned the Attitude of Humility. A successful corporate leader, his son became instrumental in helping him find his purpose.

The next time you want to alter your behavior, try these simple 3 steps:
Reflect to find out what are the influences of the "three E factors" in your life. It would give you a perspective on where exactly you can bring about a change & why you are the way you are!
Be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to alter that behavior or perspective. Be mindful when the old behavior creeps in.
Be Authentic. You cannot please everyone. It is truly better to be liked by a few who accept you for who you are, rather than be liked by a lot more for who you are not! Authenticity is the best place to operate from. No imposter syndrome whatsoever. A good place to be in.
As you mull over these points, would love to conclude with the thoughts of Confucius:
"To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right." Let the journey begin.
