In Your 40s, 50s Or 60s? Own Your Age To Get More (& Better) Interviews

Let's face it ... when you try to hide your?age if you're over 40, you're not fooling employers.

You're only fooling yourself, because trying to hide your?age?when you're?age?40+ on your?resume?(or during interviews) is more easily noticed by employers than you think.

Most?age?40+ job seekers try to hide their?age?on their?resume?by excluding early career, and graduation dates. This practice of specific exclusion is widely recommended by outplacement advisors, career coaches/authors, and professional?resume?writers. The theory is to avoid being screened out by ATSs because of older dates. Sounds good, but hiding your?age?causes you to lose far more opportunities than you gain.

Here's why you'll get more (and better) interviews when you own your?age?rather than trying to hide it:

  1. It Doesn't Work:?ATSs can be used to screen out resumes that hide data (like dates). Human reviewers can tell in an instant when you hide dates.
  2. What Are You Hiding?:?Part of the job of HR reps/recruiters is to screen out candidates who are a risk. When you hide dates, your reader can tell that you're hiding something, but doesn't know what you're hiding. Guess what other types of candidates hide dates? People trying to hide bad exits, theft, fraud, and jail time create gaps in their resumes and hide dates to hide those gaps ... and it looks just like what you do when you try to hide your age.
  3. Deceit Never Builds Trust:?Almost no one can pull off a 5 year age difference in a stressful interview (even fewer on a Zoom interview), because the interviewer's job is to judge you. Do you want to risk that you can't live up to the age perception you created on your resume? What kind of first impression will you make? Will the interviewer wonder what else are you hiding?
