Your 20s... best time to take career risks? How can you start?
Usually I start the year with a recap of what I learned the last year but last year has been particularly different. I’m transitioning from a full time freelancer to hiring some external contractors, and as the clientele expands I think it’s about time I move to properly running it as a business. Moving from full time freelancer to business owner.?
Frankly if you ask me if I thought of being at this stage 5 years ago, I would tell you NO WAY but I took a huge risk of quitting corporate 4 years back and going into this full time. Fast forward 4 years, I’m glad 21 year old me took the risk and the reward was definitely worth the risk!?
What are you willing to RISK to get that extra time with your family? Or the extra money to go on a trip??
Before I embark on the new challenge, for all aspiring people who would like to turn your 5-9 into your full time or just make an extra buck on top of your 9-5.?
Here are some things that you SHOULDN’T DO!?
Not Set Up A Company
You may think that I don’t earn a lot from freelancing, there is no point in setting up a business and all the costs associated with it.?
On the contrary, setting up a business is the most cost efficient thing you can do as a freelancer! Not only can you write off some of your expenses as business expenses before you declare your taxes, companies are more likely to deal with a registered entity. I secured my 2 biggest clients to date just because I have a registered company and that is one of the first things they ask me before engaging with me.?
Overpromise, Overcharge and Under-Deliver
I have learned one important lesson last year and I am still trying my best to implement this. Manage Expectations. Too often we say “CAN, NO PROBLEM!”, then we get excited to invoice or quote your clients a higher amount… That is the fastest way for you to lose your clients.?
The biggest lesson I learned is that you don’t need to do things fast but you need to do things well. Quality over quantity and that is what I intend to deliver to my existing clients too.?
Being aware of this and slowly building trust with your clients are of the utmost importance in freelancing. Better a few big clients than constantly going out to poach new clients.?

Ignore the Power of Collaboration and Networking
Your network is your net worth is really true when it comes to supercharging your career. Regardless if you are selling a product or selling a service, knowing the right people can mean the difference between reaching your goals in 1 year or not reaching your goals at all!?
Sometimes the way to have more of the pie is not to have a bigger slice of the pie, but to make the whole pie bigger altogether! Collaborating and Networking opens up doors to new ideas and resources that can save you the time of building something all on your own.?
Put it simply, collaboration and networking is the nitro to achieving your goals. How good you are doesn’t matter if you are not given, and opportunity or a place to showcase your talents!?
I’m not going to tell you freelancing is easy, but by doing it right makes your life so much less complicated! It can be a good way to earn an extra buck on top of your existing income, but if you are looking to go into it full time there is so much more to it than just doing a service and getting paid for it.?
