Youngwoo Ind. delivers an experienced-based safety training center to Indonesia!
We are very happy to announce, that Youngwoo Ind. can contribute to the safety of the workers in Indonesia. Why is it so important for us?
Many international companies make a clear commitment for their occupational safety and health to ensure everyone working on the project, or on the construction site has a safe work environment at all times and can return to their family and friends as healthy as when they started their day. But how to establish a safe system of work in a country, where a large number of local contractors do not meet occupational safety and health standards, as well as standard operating procedures for its workers.
Local construction workers usually have the required permits and licenses, but still, appear unskilled in many cases. This is a fact and should not be neglected. Instead, this fact should be accepted and appropriate ways found to promote a competency ramp-up for the local workforce.
What are the biggest challenges in occupational safety and health for international companies operating in countries where rather low safety standards are to be expected?
One of the reasons for this is because the high cost of access and the lack of time and opportunity for these local labor workers to get education and training in order to improve their skills in the construction sector.
Nevertheless, it’s one of the company’s responsibilities to ensure the safety and health of all these workers, with only a small window of time available for all required training measures to upskill the workers to a safe working level. Learning about the people to find out what they need to complete their tasks both safely and successfully is one key element for this.
Hyundai Motor Indonesia has taken this point seriously and has developed an experienced-based safety training center in Bekasi, Indonesia to increase worker's safety awareness and most important to improve the retention rate of what workers have learned on safety.
Here, all personnel related to the project are required to go through full experienced-based safety training before they start work on site. The safety training center takes a unique format in that, all personnel incl. subcontractor workers go through training modules reflecting real-life dangerous situations. Through this, workers learn through trial and error how accidents occur, what the consequences of unsafe work or behavior are, where the hazards and risks are to be expected later on-site, and what measures can be taken to prevent accidents and injuries. For this purpose, the modules are equipped with special features in the training area to allow employees to experience the hazards and risks in the workplace firsthand and in a safe manner.
Safety clips via TV screens at each module and the most relevant safety rules in a graphic style format for a simple and effective understanding by everyone is key to deliver effective safety training for the above-mentioned challenges. It is not an exhibition but something to try out and go through by your workforce "Learning by Doing and Experience Safety first hand.
The experienced-based safety training center consists of the following modules:
To take risks and dangers transparent in order to promote safe action in such a way that risks are reduced and accidents are avoided. Experiencing and learning through the 5 human senses such as touching, hearing, seeing, smelling, and sometimes also tasting is the focus here. Internal safety documents such as Permit to Work, Risk Assessment or Job Safety Analysis, Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures, but also accident reports are integrated into the training. Training Kiosks with various small exercises for everyone ensures fun and promotes concentration and attention of the workers.
A common example from practice is the topic of safety glasses. Not only that safety glasses are worn at all, but also that the right safety glasses are worn for the appropriate work or lighting conditions. Furthermore, it happens that instead of suitable safety glasses, fashion-style sunglasses are worn out of unawareness or as a status symbol. But how can we raise awareness? In practice, there is hardly any improvement through constant admonishing or asking to wear safety glasses.
With the Safety Glass Experience module, every employee can try out for themselves why suitable safety glasses protect against projectiles, flying particles, or other objects. The module works with the so-called shock effect to allow the dangers to be experienced first hand, e.g., during grinding works. The experience remains in the memory and thus helps to promote the behavior of wearing safety glasses suitable for the job.?
This type of safety training center for the workers in Indonesia will also serve as a blueprint for other construction and industrial projects in Indonesia and in any other countries worldwide to train safe behavior as easily and understandably as possible.
