According to UNODC (United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime) there is a substantial amount of raise observed among youth of substance abuse more than elders. Most research suggests that early (12–14 years old) to late (15–17 years old) adolescence is a critical risk period for the initiation of substance use and that substance use may peak among young people aged 18–25 years.
Some more research conducted all over the world including Asian countries following are some findings:
· Cannabis is a common drug of choice for young people
· Two extreme typologies of drug use among young people: club drugs in nightlife settings; and Inhalants among street children
· Many young people are involved in the drug supply chain due to poverty and lack of opportunities for social and economic advancement.
· Increases in rates of drug use among older people are partly explained by aging cohorts of users.
Young people’s path to the harmful use of substances is complex. Some get addicted due to their bad environment they are involved some do it for the act of boldness and show off to other fellow teenagers.
In Malaysia, there is a rise seen from 2005 to 2018 from 30% to 80% of youth involved in the usage of substance and getting addicted which have a direct effect on their health, their determination to achieving high goals in life and mental societal pressure.
