Young Professionals: Be Open and Ready

An internship gives students a unique glimpse into corporate life, exposure to leadership, the opportunity to connect and network, and discover what they want to do with their career.?

I know firsthand – a summer internship changed the trajectory of my life. My first internship was made possible by INROADS, where I was introduced to the mortgage company Fannie Mae. There’s a twist to my story, however: another student was selected for the one internship they had. The door remained open for me because a recruiter saw my potential and took a chance, advocating for a second position. It was through my internship at Fannie Mae, that I discovered my lifelong career and personal passion: to help others and to advocate for financial inclusion.

The reason I share my recruitment story with young professionals I meet is to emphasize the importance of being open and ready for whatever life presents you with, and how one person, opportunity, or summer internship can completely change your life.

I shared this story recently with TIAA’s 300+ 2023 summer interns during a terrific, hour-long fireside chat. In addition, I also shared some advice that’s applicable not only when starting an internship or beginning a career, but in a variety of situations you may encounter. Here are a few of the tips I shared.

First, it is crucial to remember that you rent your title, but you own your character. Character is the foundation of leadership. It is vital and necessary to always bring your qualities to your work. Be it your values or core attributes, it is necessary in any place or job to bring yourself to your work. The title you currently hold is temporary – but your character is who you are and will be with you forever.

Second, approach your work with open arms. It is easy to show up and remain so consumed in your own work that you never reach out to others and build your network. Keeping your “arms closed” only limits your potential within your work, growth, and ability to learn. It is key to come into every day and meeting with open arms, be willing to listen, ask questions, and build on a variety of skills that you are here to develop.

Third, invest in yourself. When I speak with interns and early-career professionals, I always emphasize the importance of saving for the future. That can be hard to appreciate at such a young age. But, through my own experience, I know that a little goes a long way. Ever since my first job, I have maxed out my 401(k) plan, and taken advantage of workplace benefits. It’s also important to invest in attributes; investing in yourself and the value you add to work is something that must be at the forefront of your mind to truly bring your best self forward.

Lastly, do not dim your light. We spend too much time being hesitant to take a seat at the table. The amazing truth is that there is no barrier or limit to your ability to make an impact. When you find yourself in a room where you are the “only” one of few, pull up a chair and make sure you are bringing your voice and your perspective. Your difference is your superpower. Be confident in yourself and be willing to share your authentic self with others.

I enjoyed meeting and speaking with our interns at TIAA, and I salute interns everywhere for choosing to spend your summer gaining the experience and tools you need to succeed. I urge you to take advantage of all that an internship offers you and use this experience to further your career. You have already taken the first step!

Thasunda, as a former INROADS V.P. I fully endorse your advise. In the 70's when INROADS started if was unheard in corporate America the concept of internships. Today, when I read the news both in the USA and Mexico the opportunity for internships is very common. INROADS was a pioneer back then? and it's concept change positively the life's of thousands of young people, like yourself. When I see stories like yours, I am very proud of the INROADS' legacy.
