A Young Professional's Guide to BIM Competence

Hello, and thank you for subscribing to this newsletter, where we aim to provide a fresh perspective on BIM. We strive to include new viewpoints and welcome corrections or additional insights we might have overlooked. This time, we delve into a nuanced topic: whether obtaining a BIM qualification is worthwhile, and if so, what outcomes can be expected. Abhay, a recent graduate, shares his experiences from a Graduate Diploma in BIM.?
In Abhay's words, "The BIM diploma I completed last year spanned two semesters, encompassing eight courses. Each course code incremented from 01 to 07 (with a research paper containing 2 sub-courses, which as a whole counts as one), reflecting increasing complexity. I take the complexity with a grain of salt, firmly believing that it devolves with time, and all it takes is time to learn.?
We started with GCBM701, providing basics in architectural modeling in Revit. Architectural modeling forms the foundation for coordination with structural, MEP, etc. As explained by a BIM expert, it is the fundamental aspect of modeling, as Revit users initially begin with architectural modeling. I only realized this after completing the course; otherwise, learning Revit would have just been trial and error, calling for months of unnecessary work.?
GCBM702 offered insights into basic to detailed level documentation, ignited by following a BEP (Building Execution Plan) first-hand. To add to this, BIM is nothing without documentation. Seamless, timely, and organized documentation saves a ton of time, as BIM essentially works on a common data environment where all issues, discrepancies, queries, etc., get listed. One such software to achieve this daunting yet rewarding and time-consuming task is BIM360.?
GCBM703 sequentially highlighted '3,' complementing the previous two. This course fully covered structural modeling, concurrent with my full-time job. It involved structural analysis using Robot in association with Revit, emphasizing key takeaways like structural analysis and LOD 500 structural modeling, including steel connections. A few examples are shown below.?

Next was GCBM704, focusing on MEP modeling. Each course involved case study-based assessments, requiring the application of reading material to practical model implementation.?
To wrap up, keeping in mind the crispness and ease of absorbing the above information, the main points were as follows:?
After a semester break, this course delved into the coordination aspect, using Revit BIM scheduling, transitioning to Excel sheets, and understanding data using Power BI for data analysis. Project manager scheduling was extensively discussed via Navisworks, creating animations that aligned everything like a jigsaw puzzle. Facilities management using COBie data followed, demystifying how equipment for building functionality gets managed. GCBM704 showcased Autodesk Tandem, an intuitive, user-friendly tool following COBie standards, generating reports.?
The best part is students' introduction to industrial experts already in action, including VDDC experts, digital leads, project managers, and architects internationally working. One such expert taught us to use Cove. tool to assess a building's carbon footprint in the realm of eco-friendliness where everyone strives to become a minor carbon exhibitor as possible.?
Lastly, we had the freedom to choose a research subject, and mine was heritage BIM. This research explored preserving heritage through BIM, covering contractors' details, construction methods, and future recommendations. All consolidated in one source of truth - the BIM model.
In conclusion, education matters, but its effectiveness increases when accompanied by practical experience. This course prevented me from endless BIM content consumption, offering tangible benefits. Without guidance, it's akin to drawing on a blank canvas. Education is valuable, but practical experience is the key to unlocking its true potential.?

10 个月Certainly a worthwhile endeavor, as someone once said, education never goes unused. I recommend people pursue it, and moreover, realize the vast amount of education available for free on the internet. This can easily cater to one's needs, such as BIM requirements. Thanks to ArcAligned for allowing me to showcase this, which might otherwise have been lost in records. This is something everyone can relate to.
