Dreamers around America were hoping to cash in on the nearly half a billion dollar Powerball lottery earlier this week, but most players were in for a let down. One North Carolina mom, however, was among the lucky winners.
Marie Holmes, a mother of four with cerebral palsy, won $188 million dollars in the Powerball lottery, according to Fox TV Wilmington.
Holmes was asked if she’s prepared for her life to change and answered, “I’m ready for it. I’m ready to embrace the change. I’m very grateful for what’s about to happen for my family.”
Holmes previously worked at Walmart and McDonald’s, but quit to take care of her children.
The mother told a local reporter that the first thing she did when she realized she had the winning ticket was scare her kids by screaming.
“I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw the ticket and checked it,” Holmes told a local reporter.
When asked what she’s going to do first with her winnings, Holmes answered, “I’m going to pay my tithes. I wouldn’t have none of it if it wasn’t for God.”
The other Powerball tickets were sold in Texas and Puerto Rico but those winners have not come forward.
Holmes actually hasn’t turned in the winning ticket yet because she wants to seek out financial advise first.
“It’s a lucky day to be in North Carolina,” Alice Garland, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery, told FoxWilmington. “We look forward to meeting the jackpot winner, but the most important thing for the winner to do today is sign the back of the ticket and secure it in a safe place. This is a life-changing event. The lucky winner should take some time and get sound professional advice before coming in to get the big check.”
