World Youth Skills Day is celebrated annually on July 15. It has become a global event since its establishment by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. The day emerged from a growing recognition of the need to equip young people with essential skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship in our rapidly evolving global economy. The first observance of this important day took place in July 2015, marking the beginning of a worldwide focus on youth skills development.

The inception of World Youth Skills Day can be traced back to Sri Lanka's initiative, which garnered support from the Group of 77 (G77) and China. In December 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution that officially designated July 15 as a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of youth skills development. This initiative was born out of the understanding that young people face significant barriers to employment and education, challenges that are further intensified by rapid technological advancements, economic shifts, and globalization.

The primary goal of World Youth Skills Day is to raise awareness about the critical importance of investing in youth skills development. This investment is seen as crucial for fostering innovation, driving economic progress, and ensuring a more inclusive and equitable future for all. The day serves multiple purposes, including promoting skills development, encouraging dialogue between youth and key stakeholders, raising awareness about the need for marketable skills, and celebrating the potential of young people as agents of change.

World Youth Skills Day aims to address the issues of youth unemployment and underemployment by promoting technical and vocational education, fostering innovation, and enhancing productivity. The day also highlights the importance of sustainable skills development, particularly in the face of global challenges such as economic inequality, violent conflicts, and environmental sustainability.

Each year, World Youth Skills Day adopts a specific theme to focus on various aspects of youth skills development. For example, the theme for 2024 is "Youth Skills for Peace and Development," which emphasizes the crucial role of young people in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. This theme reflects the broader goal of empowering youth to contribute to a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future.

World Youth Skills Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in the skills of young people.
