Young Canadians bring a needed perspective to solving our pressing challenges
We hear it all the time – youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are leaders today. And I’m reminded of this every time I spend time with young people.
Yesterday, I met virtually with my Youth Council from my riding of Markham—Thornhill, a group of over 30 constituents from the ages of -14 to 26 from all different backgrounds and cultures, who are some of the most thoughtful people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. We had an excellent conversation about how COVID-19 is impacting students, and what the future looks like beyond the current crisis.
Earlier this year, before the pandemic hit, my Youth Council and I spent a few hours together on a Saturday afternoon. I listened to their passionate and insightful views about how racism affects their everyday lives, and why fighting climate change is essential to our country’s wellbeing. I leave all of our discussions with an invigorated energy and drive to make our community and our country a better place for all Canadians.
Young people have been at the forefront of change throughout history, and it’s no wonder why – they bring necessary and diverse perspectives to the real and pressing issues that our the world is facing. Things like climate change, mental health, and inequality.
Young people today are informed. They are solution-driven. They ask tough questions. They are determined to make our country a better place for their loved ones and their communities. And as a policy-maker, their input and advocacy is invaluable to me, especially in these extraordinary times.
We need them and their voices to move our country forward. That’s why I will keep listening to and learning from young Canadians as we tackle today’s challenges and chart a course for a brighter future.
