You'll never be short of advice.

2017 started a business. 2021 sold it. Now sharing the journey. Founder of Cassidilly & FounderON.
The highlight of the week for me was a trip to Lille with my Dad to see England just about beat Samoa in the Rugby World Cup.
As we were leaving the stadium, 200 miles from home, amongst 50,000 other rugby fans I heard someone shouting my Dad's name. It turned out to be someone who was originally a pupil of his, and went on to be a colleague for over 30 years.
My Dad was a teacher and a keen rugby player and it's become a running joke in our family now that wherever we go in the world, he will find someone that knows him. Long before the world of social media followers, he has built up an actual network of friends that is far more impressive.
For my working life I have considered success to be career progression, client wins and wealth. And much of that success was achieved to the detriment of actual personal friendships and relationships. But every time that I hear someone shouting my Dads name, in a far flung corner of the world I get envious and wish that I'd spent far more time working on that version of success.
Anyway, back to progression, client wins and wealth for now :-)
In last weeks update we had just returned from a trip to Scotland to view a property that would become the cornerstone of our new family venture, Cassidilly. A week on and we're firmly in the infuriating mind game phase of trying to buy a house. The phase where both sides don't want to show their full hand, but in reality should just do it and make things quicker. We loved the property, and it ticks all of the boxes we were looking for, but it would be a huge project for us. So we've made what we consider our best offer and have decided we're willing to lose it (hear that Savills if you're reading...). If we don't get it, I'll be really disappointed as I hate slow progress in anything, but as annoying as it is when people say it to you at the time, these things happen for a reason.
That brings me on to advice. Something that is never in short supply, whether it's asked for or not. While I was setting up Molzi, someone gave me the guidance to search out advice from people that have done what you want to do. I followed their suggestion (as they had just sold their business) and would consider most advice that I got on my journey to be positive. But I've found it interesting since starting to tell some people about my plans with Cassidilly. The reaction and advice has been complete opposites based on whether the person opted for an entrepreneurial career journey, or a more traditional corporate one.

The reaction from the corporate route has been slight horror at the investment planned, the idea in general and the risk vs the alternative reward of just playing it safe. On the other hand the current and former business founders that I've told have immediately seen the potential, easy ways to mitigate the risk and have even pitched to get involved.
So if you're considering taking the leap into the world of entrepreneurship then make sure you're seeking out advice from at least some people that have been there and done it. But also, if you're looking to work your way up the corporate ladder, then probably the worst advice would be from a founder who will tell you to throw away the big safe salary for a bet on yourself.
That's my advice anyway. So only take it if it's relevant to you!
