Are you writing your resume or your eulogy?

I have spent so much of the last 25 years focused on writing my resume and achieving the impossible. In the most humble way, I have done a damn good job at it. But with every winner, there has to be a loser.

Thinking about dying can feel morbid, but it creates a sobering reality of how you spend your time, talent, and resources. Living a meaningful life is something we all strive for, yet often we find ourselves caught up in the daily grind of work, material possessions, and societal expectations. In this fast-paced world, it's easy to become consumed with building an impressive resume - accumulating achievements, accolades, and status symbols. But what if we shifted our focus from our resume to our eulogy?

Your resume summarizes your career accomplishments - the jobs you've held, the projects you've completed, and the awards you've won. It's a document that showcases your skills, experience, and qualifications. While having a strong resume is important for career advancement, it doesn't necessarily define the legacy you leave behind.

On the other hand, your eulogy is a tribute to your life - the person you were, the impact you had on others, and the memories you left behind. It reflects the values you held dear and the relationships you cultivated. Unlike a resume, your eulogy is not a list of accomplishments; it's a story of the person you were and the lives you touched.

Living a life focused on your eulogy means prioritizing relationships, experiences, and personal growth. It means being kind, compassionate, and empathetic toward others. It means living a life of purpose and meaning, guided by your values and principles. It means cultivating deep connections with family, friends, and community.

Why focus on your Eulogy?

  1. Legacy: Your eulogy is a reflection of the legacy you leave behind. When you pass away, people will remember you for who you were, not just for what you accomplished.
  2. Relationships: Focusing on your eulogy means prioritizing relationships over material possessions or career advancement. Building strong relationships is a key component of a happy and fulfilling life.
  3. Meaning and purpose: Living a life of purpose and meaning gives you a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that cannot be achieved through professional accomplishments alone.
  4. Self-improvement: Focusing on your eulogy means prioritizing personal growth and self-improvement. It means continually working on becoming the best version of yourself.
  5. Happiness: Studies show that people prioritize relationships and experiences over material possessions are happier and more fulfilled.

Focusing on your eulogy means prioritizing relationships, experiences, personal growth, and a life of purpose and meaning. While building a strong resume is important for career advancement, it doesn't necessarily define the legacy you leave behind.

So, ask yourself what kind of eulogy you want to have. What kind of person do you want to be remembered as?
