Are you a worrier?

Are you someone that tends to just think, "What's going to go wrong next?" A lot of people are, but somewhere I think you know that worrying is pretty useless.
First of all, it's just giving you pain twice. Once when you're worrying and the second time if it actually comes true. Second, when you think about it, it's really useless. It's like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but it never goes anywhere.
How do you train yourself to worry less without spending a lot of money on professional help? Here's my trick for you.
Sit down tonight, pull out a piece of paper, and list your top 10 worries. I know this might be difficult for you. It's not fun to think about the things that worry you, but just do it this one time and play along with me here.
Once listed, go through and number them as best you can so that they're in order. Read them over. Make sure they are what you think they are.
Then, fold that piece of paper up, put it in a drawer, and set a reminder on your phone for six months from now.
Six months from now, I want you to pull out that piece of paper, look at it, and think about how many of those worries actually came true.
If you're like most people, what you'll find is that 60-65% of all the things on that list never happened. Of the ones that did happen, you'll find that a), things didn't turn out as bad as you thought they were going to or, b), are things you could never have impacted for the better anyway.
Leaving you with a very, very small number of things that actually went wrong.
Then I want you to repeat the exercise. In fact, it's an exercise you can do for your entire life.
What's that going to do? It's going to train your subconscious and unconscious mind that worry is useless because you just won't say it, but you'll actually see it. That'll make you feel more confident and it'll allow you to go forth with less worry in your life.
That means less stress and less stress means you're going to be healthier, happier and, frankly, a heck of a lot more fun to be around!!
That's my best advice on how to eliminate worry from your life. Simple, fast, effective.

5 年So true Sir. I learned this one the hard way through years and years of worrying. I finally realized to just relax, keeping doing my best, and keep trying to be a better person each day. Although the worrying thoughts still come,, they dont imobilize me any more.

5 年Loved the article Richard. And not to be a heckler, but I've learnt over time that my ADHD mind doesn't work that way, and doesn't allow me to see things that way. When confronted with a set of choices, my mind goes into overdrive to consider as many potential pitfalls, risks and issues that could crop up. Through the years I've learnt to harness that visibility and try at best to navigate around them whenever possible by taking certain precautions and risk measures. And it has helped me immensely. Granted, I do not think this approach is for everyone. I have a lot of close friends and relationships who prefer not hearing all the thoughts in my mind before embarking on an endeavour. So I look at it as a competitive advantage of sorts and work with it.
